The Home Office has proposed a new order, which could give police and the courts the power to give suspected hackers and spammers the equivalent of an Asbo (anti-social behaviour order). The order, known as the Serious Crime Prevention Order, is intended to help fight rising cybercrime levels, and will enable civil courts to impose the orders on individuals, even if they haven\'t been proven guilty, or worse, convicted of a crime. This only applies to the UK, for now at least.

Google looks for best programmers Google is on the hunt for new talent Google has launched a competition to find the best computer programmers in Europe, with £21,000 in prize money and jobs at the firm up for grabs. Under the internet search giant\'s Code Jam competition, entrants will have to crack \"some of the toughest computer coding challenges around\". Contestants will first compete online for 500 places in the first round and then 200 spots in the second round. A total of 50 finalists will then be flown to Dublin for the final deciders.

During his two-year quest, McKinnon broke into computers at the Pentagon, NASA and the Johnson Space Center, as well as systems used by the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.

The search firm\'s denial came after the Electronic Privacy Information Centre (EPIC) submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to the FBI seeking information about whether the bureau was considering the \"possible use of Google\'s Gmail service for law enforcement and intelligence investigations.\" EPIC, which gave an award last week to a California state senator who is trying to ban Gmail, announced the request immediately after Google said it was filing for an initial public offering.

The City of London, one of the biggest financial centres in the world, is to be provided with comprehensive wireless coverage over the entire area. The aim is to make the Square Mile the biggest wireless zone in Europe. Once installed, the WiFi network will allow anyone in the City to access the Internet using their laptops or wireless PDA devices.

The FBI has asked several companies to start including FBI only backdoors into their software and hardware.
