I was just wondering…purely out of curiosity, how does a computer now where to hop to?

eg you the packets hop from you > ip1 > ip2 > server then the webpage comes back.

so how does your computer know where to hop to first?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name_system… Basically there's a records of all domain names and where the servers are (in IP address form)
