weird dates for updates from Windows

just today I've managed to fix the Windows' install on his laptop, and since he mentioned that the problem occured after he had updated Windows, so I decided to open up KUninst and found out the problem as:

The problem, as he explained it, is that after he had updated Windows, bluescreens began to occur, and while he could simply restart it, nowadays it simply crashed after the Windows XP splashscreen.

He told me that this problem had occured before, and the tech did tell him NOT to update Windows, but since Windows Update mentioned it as critical and vital security updates, he simply updated it.

But what baffles me is the dates. Why is it that all the dates for all Windows and Office updates are listed on the end of the 19th Century? Is it some kind of a flaw or was my uncle being tricked into downloading malware?

He uses XP SP3 as well as Office 2007, btw.

I checked at System Restore and found "Software Distribution System 3.0" appearing in multiple entries for the past 2 months, and I did a little search and found instructions to remove it, but I still can't find the offending program so that I can remove it.

Does anyone here have any idea what to do?

Malware will often disguise themselves as a valid windows update using the same files but with invalid date entries. Run a full scan with malwarebytes and see if it finds something. If nothing else run hijackthis and post the log.

It can also be your CMOS was reset, this would turn back your clock a while back. My clock resets back to 01/01/1701!

And if I'm not miss taken myself the install dates are saved by the installer itself, not the content of it.

On the other half, it could be malware. Run a Ad-Aware scan or similar and see what it comes up with.

Go into BIOS and check the clock as well.
