Photoshop Gradient help - Gradual transparency

Ok, this is probably going to sound like a 'noob' question to some people, but I'm new to Photoshop (only started using it in earnest about two days ago).

So basically what I want to do is erase with a gradient, a reflection coming off an item in the image, so that it can be placed on a webpage of any colour and the reflection still looks decent. I know this should technically be possible (as I'm saving it as a png with a 24bit alpha channel). But how?

So like, the reflection goes form opaque, and then gradually transparent, but all I have at the moment is one solid reflection. And I can't stick a single colour gradient on it because then it wouldn't look right on different backgrounds.

I hope that question makes sense :P thanks in advance

(and yes, I did ask google first)
