well what exactly do you know how to do, as far as rooting a box goes?

Not much.

well, have you ever gained access to a server remotely, even if you were given the username and password? (such as in a wargame)

I remember that I did one or two lvls on an easy wargame a while back, but I think that I need to refresh my memory when it comes to rooting as I have probably forgot most of the things. I'm not sure but I think that the wargame was named fishy something.
