Hacking win xp pro passwords

i am trying to get access to a windows xp pro laptop… i got a few of them from a friend and i am trying to set them up for him to use… they are used computers. i tryed to do the restart in safe mode with command prompt, but that did nothing as the display settings arent in a list, i have to actually type in the username and password. I also tried downloading PHLAK onto a usb drive. I put it into the laptop, but it did nothing. Any way to get past it? Thanks alot.

Get a live-cd (linux distro, like Ubuntu) and put it in the cd-rom drive before you boot the computer, I thought there was an article on this btw.

Or…just download pwdump and run it on windows ;) it dumps the SAM file and shows you the hashes, then you'll need to find a SAM hash cracker.

i cant format… if i could i would, but i have no access to the computer except for the login screen. can u tell me how to format without the password. also, formatting wornt erase the os, right?
