Complete n00b-I need your help...

…okay, so i was watching the hacking videos here:

and i would like to know what distribution of linux he is using, if it is possible to tell. Also, do all linuxs' come with that window to the left, It displays your computer stats etc. http://navynos.linux.pl/files/hack_movie/screen1.jpg

Also, im sure this is a very frequently asked question, but what is the best linux for hacking etc? Ive never had linux before and i want o make sure i choose the right one before the big download! thanks for any help, its very much appreciated!

he's using his own brand of linux: navynos. If your wanting an easy linux distro i would suggest something like suse or fedora But if you what to learn linux i would suggest slackware, It isn't as hard as its made out to be to install Slackware. I'm planning on switching to it. There really isn't a distro for hacking except phlack and navyos but i'd suggest slackware. The stats bar on the side are addons, I suggest that you use kde and to get them bars you should use an addon called superkaramba.

sorry, but is kde like an app that allows you to put addons onto your linux?

see with windows, you get the windows desktop and thats it, But, with linux you can choose. The one in my picture the desktop is kde. In the navyos the desktop is fluxbox.

there are loads so just google them. You should use kde. kde is the most common and user-friendly, most distros should have it as the default one.

ah okay, thanks again. to install slackware, i should create a partition on my harddrive, right? so that windows and linux are kept separate? dont suppose you know any decent free partition softwares?

well you should look around first, slackware might not be the greatest choice if you new to linux. browse google and find one that you like. also you should try knoppix first. Its a live cd so it doesn't need to be installed, you just put it in the cd drive and restart. I would suggest you use a second hard-drive for linux so you dont bugger windows or vica versa.

well, i'd suggest gnome b/c kde is slow.

Yea man im a bit of a noob also and im going for Ubuntu. It'll be my first linux installation so if its easy or should i say understandable ill let you know. Also if you find out how to partition your HD for *nix let me know or show me the site. Thnx

yea i use ubuntu sometims, i got it on live cd, if u dont kno if u like ti then get a live cd first, u can dl it or get a free disc sent to u, either way i say thats the way to start using linux
