if you want everything to "just work" then you want ubuntu.

If you want to not be a sissy little girl and actually learn something other than bad habits, then install gentoo, or debian.

Fedora is ok and all. .but largely they're just turning it into a test bed for RHEL, so it has a lot of the drawbacks nonof the perks.

I'd recommend either Debian or Gentoo (or Mandriva, if you want a hint of "just workage" without all the crap of ubuntu). Mandriva is what i recommend to linux newbies.

Or LFS snigger

Debian is a good choice, i use it for my servers but for my main computer i use kubuntu. Gotta agree with the post above the new ubuntu is great, its just very easy to use but still just as functional.
