!– Please note, this is a long article dealing with repect, what respect should be, and other opinions I have about the current status of respect… Enjoy, and please, answer my question, what is respect? –!

Respect… A word used so freely yet so misunderstood. What is respect really? Is it the fear driven into us by our parental figures in order to make us trust that they know what is best and go along in a drone like state? Is it what the governments tell us to do in accordance with the property we see everywhere, or the things that we can't see except in tech form, such as websites? Is respect just another way to avoid a fight, or avoid a confrontation? Does respect still have the high holding is used to in older times, does it even matter anymore?

Should we show respect to the ideas of others in order to be 'fair' and be an all around 'good-person'? Is it possible that this respect that we so often speak of is merely a way for us to say that we don't want to speak for ourselves, and we don't need to be the leaders, that it takes too much work to 'fight the system' and 'think outside the box'?

I found myself scanning a site recently, deciding whether or not to add my E-Mail to their completely unprotected database, where it could be accessed by spambots and Phishers, just so I could type meaningless pixels to someone I will never meet, just to get replys like " Well I respect your opinion, but… " or " I respect that, but it seems… "; Respect isn't about someone earning your trust, and your faith in them as a human being capable of showing you the same reverence back, it has become a way of dodging arguments, the world has become afraid of conflict for the most part, respecting others opinions while you completely go against what they stated and shove your opinion upon someone you 'respect';

We are taught to respect others' religions, races, thoughts, ideas, lifestyle, marital status, living conditions, looks, styles, etc. WHY?! Why should I respect someone just because they are black, or tanner, or asian, or mexican? Why should I respect the religions of others if it affects me; The Christian religion when spliced with the US Government has been truly screwing it over, do people not see that? I don't care if someone is a Christian, Jew, Buddhist(Even though it isn't really a religion) or anything else, as long as it doesn't affect me, have fun, once it does, I care;

Respect seems to me that is should be reserved for those you would gladly talk about a site you 'hacked' into and reaped the benefits of learning, and not fear that they will gladly spread the gossip of it for you, leading to jail or community service; It should be reserved for those who you would place your hands in their hands; It should be reserved not for someone who does something 'great' but does something 'great' for a 'great' reason, other than just becoming famous; There are many people that others say they hate, or they are so 'fake' and yet I know that they help people out, not like feeding the poor or giving away clothes, but if a friend feels like shit they will help them out; Those are the people that get my respect, they aren't helping just to get some more credit for their resume, they are doing it because they actually care; I respect those who can see others opinions through their eyes rather than saying they respect their opinion and then discarding it is a second… No one can really, truly, say what respect is, no one can really say what anything is, we base what something 'is' upon the general agreement of others; Hopefully respect, honor, love, promises and many other things that have been downgraded will return to the status they so greatly deserve;

In the last paragraph you seems confuse respect with trust. Generally respect is about showing regard or esteem for someone who have differences from you (be it religion, race, opinion, political party). You can respect someone for what they do or how they do it and still dislike the person.

You shouldn't necessarily respect people of other races, creeds, lifestyles, etc. However, you should NOT base your judgments whether to respect them or not based on these things. You should respect someone if they have done something that impresses you. You shouldn't NOT respect someone simply based on something like race, that's ignorant and prejudical.

That is exactly what I was saying is stupid, I have known schools/groups to say that we should respect someone because of their race/religion; Or to respect their choice to do as such, but thank you for commenting;

Right, you should have enough respect for other groups to allow them to do what they want, while you do what you want. That's all they are saying.

Nicely done, Deshouleres. Whenever somebody tells me that I have to respect them, I tell them that they have to earn my respect… and that they're not on a good start by demanding it.

Demanding Respect ==> Fascism ==> In Our Schools Today

Also, I think statments such as i respect your opion are needed not just to avoid confrontation but because they are polite… no-one will really respect you if oyu dont respect others, fear maybe, but never true respect…

wolfmankurd… your comments are always fun; I agree that everything to an extent is good, but when you say I respect your opinion just to avoid confrontation, rather than actually respecting the time and effort it took them to write it, I think that is wrong, course, tis just me opinion eh?
