Unlock System Preferences [Mac]

Unlock System Preferences [Mac]

In Mac OS 10 and above, if you are not the highes-ranking user on the computer, then higher users can control what you can use in System Preferences. This article will show you how to use all of the system preferences even if you do not have the privileges to access them.

Worked on Mac OS 10.4.4 when done previously, and just tested and worked on Mac OS 10.4.6.

This is really easy, just make a copy of System Preferences (not an alias, an actual copy). It will tell you that "One or more items have special permissions and cannot be copied". Just ignore that, it all works good.

Now, ctrl-click (right-click) on "System preferences copy" and go to "Show package contents". Now navigate in the window that pops up, to: /Contents/Resources/NSPrefPaneGroups.plist

Delete NSPrefPaneGroups.plist. Now, you can close that window and open your copy of system preferences. You will notice that most of the interface has gone, apart from the toolbar at the top of the window, and of course the menu-bar. You can now access all of your freshly unlocked preferences using that menubar by simply selecting them in the "View" menu.

Enjoy your new privileges!

So, uh… what is this for? I mean I could make some guesses based on the context, but I don't really know what you're talking about here…

Damn, i read this tutorial from top to bottom w/o knowing wht it is refering to, or what it is suggesting. A more specific title would be something to keep in mind next time, specially when making articles/tutorials. Do you work for Nike Lambo? (get it?) "Just do it"

I was Pepe to start with, then I changed to Lambo, I changed back to Pepe again because I want to make my name on this site different to my name on other sites.
