Downtime.

Downtime.

We all know the drill. Having two conflicting stories for this downtime. Hosts telling me one thing, other members telling me another. I'm more inclinded to believe the hosts, but i'll leave it up to you.

On a happier note. New compeition. Competition: Write a indepth essay long article on a security related topic. Prize: £10 or a t-shirt.

Click readmore, for information on downtime and new competition.

New compeition. In an attempt to get some really long decent articles (see netfish's profile ;) ) i've put together a article compeittion with a cash prize.

Competition: Write a indepth essay long article on a security related topic. Prize: £10 or a t-shirt.

  • Articles must include "how to patch / prevent this" if your doing an article on exploits.
  • When writing the article, include a foot note saying you wish this to be entered into the compeittion.
  • I will only be giving out the prize if a minimum of 10 articles in total are submitted.

If this is successful it might turn into a monthly thing.

Deadline: HBHCon date.

Downtime: Hosts are telling me its a .core file problem. Ever heard of a .core file? If so, let me know what the hell it is!!

Other people are blaming it on DDoS attacks.

I asked the hosts about these attacks and they confirmed them, but said the new hardware firewall has dealt with them. On top of that they were kind enough to send logs off to the servers responsible and appanretly the hosting companies who own these servers are "investigating the attacks and will take appropriate action".

Who knows, might be a case of people exploiting the fact hbh is down in an attempt to get a bit of fame. Or might be a case of an actual DDoS attack which somehow magically created these .core files. Or even the DDoS attacks were effective.

Who to believe… Hosts who base their conclusions on server logs and reports, or hackers claiming to of ddosed hbh that base their conclusions on the fact hbh was offline.

I know who i'd rather believe, but up to you.

Future of HBH: Either way, HBH is back. Might be looking into buying a dedicated server for HBH, might be worth a thought. Good news is i think its now reaching that level of of traffic and popularity that a dediacted server might be a wise idea. A very kind HBH member is donating a server hopefully sometime next month, now i just got to find somewhere to host it, curretly my ISP upload speed wont support the volume of traffic hbh gets.

Maybe i can bunk it in with a server rack at one of the companies where i work. Maybe even send it off to my current hosts and pay them to sort out its bandwidth etc. I'll see what i can do and keep you updated.

Keep an eye out for those new challenges system is uploading, he'll make a news post once they're up and running.

Take care and have a great week.

You can't submit your php|a article mozzer, not only would half of the people here not appreciate it but it needs to be unique to this site. (somewhat) And also, if you mean CSRF, knock yourself out xD

articles have to be new. you cant submit old articles, this is because hte whole idea of this compeittion is to give HBH a monthly increase in decent articles.

um is that core files as in when a program has a segmentation fault? cos if thats so then there may be a buffer overflow that HBH is causing/someone is performing on the HBH server.
