Tools you'll need: ResourceHacker, download > http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/ Photoshop (you probably have this already if you plan to use this article!)
OK, so what is this about? Simple. Ever want to change that annoying adobe splash screen into something more personal? Want to maybe add a "pirate edition" logo (no offense to ninja-lovers) or a "Right to Copy" instead of those annoying copyright logos? Want the splash to go along with a skin you use? No problem. We're going to simply change an image resource in one of PS's dlls.

Browse to your Photoshop directory, probably %homedrive%/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS2 or CS3. Copy PSArt.dll to your desktop, and rename it to PSArt.dll.bak. This is simply a backup in case you screw something up :p. Now just make another copy on your desktop, keep this one's original name. This is the one we'll patch.

Open PSArt.dll (the one on your desktop) with Resource Hacker and open /PNGF/SPLASHARTFEATHER.PNG if you use CS2. If you're using CS3, you want to look for SPLASHARTBACKGROUND.PNG. Click its 1033 resource and Action -> Save Resource as Binary. Save it to your desktop and call it SPLASHARTFEATHER.PNG. That's the splash screen background; open and edit it with Photoshop, then save.

Edit your SPLASHARTFEATHER.PNG or SPLATHARTBACKGROUND.PNG and make it look really awesome! Remember not to put anything in the middle; only the top or left, because the credits are in the middle. If you want to find out how to remove those, great, please post a link in a comment. I personally am fine with them; hard work deserves due credit.

Patching the dll: Now, back in registry hacker, open up the PSArt.dll on your desktop and browse back to the splash background resource (above). Right-click on the 1033 resource and "Replace resource…". Now, use the prompt box to open your edited PNG image, and for type: PNGF, name: splashartfeather.png, and language: 1033. Now save your patch. Close photoshop, browse to its directory, and rename PSArt.dll to PSArt.dll.bak. Now, paste in your patch that you just made and open PS. If all went well, you'll have your own custom splash screen!

As soon as I get done setting up Fedora (and if I'm not too busy with school :\ ) I'm going to see what else I can do with the splash logo… I'd at least like to take out the annoying white credits, they don't exactly go along with a black splash bg very well… and yes, dlls are fun, try shell32.dll in either Windows or system32 on a win system. It has all the explorer icons and images :D

I like Resource Hacker, and I like screwing with splash screens… but, I'm not crazy about this article. It was definitely concise; in fact, it's my opinion that it could've been more concise and fit into a stickied forum post. Still, you accomplished what you set out to do, it was well-explained, and you didn't try too hard to be funny or annoying. I hope your later articles carry the same positive structure!

i hadnt thought about useing RH in that way, might have to go on a spree lol, i hate some splash's
maybe the windows one needs owning!

Several open source programs have selective splash features; Most linux distro X logins, for example, and GIMP. Anyone know something for nix that can extract and modify Windows dlls? I hate having to reboot every time I do something like this for my friends…
And who gave this poor? :(
