This article was written to help you create awesome starfields in photoshop.

Ok so open a new document, mine was 600 x 200 with 72 p/i res.

Create a new layer by going to the bottom of the layers palette (bottom right) and clicking the icon second to the right once. Delete the default background layer by right clicking it in the layers palette and selecting "Delete Layer."

Press D to set your colors to black and white. Then in the main tools palette click the white box that is being overlapped by a black one and change it to very dark gray when the color selector comes up. I used hexidecimal #333333 or RGB (51,51,51).

Go up to Filter > Render > Clouds. After you have done this in the layers palette in the dropdown box that says normal, change it to "multiply."

Now right click the layer and select "duplicate layer." In this new layer go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint. Select "medium dots" in the dropdown box. After this in the layes palette with the duplicated layer selected change the opacity to about 20-28% (this box is right next to the one you changed before).

Now again create a new layer that is blank by going to the bottom of the layers palette and clicking the icon second to the right. Now importantwhile holding down the ALT key on Windows or OPTION key i believe on a mac and go to Layer > Merge Visible.

In this new layer go up to Filter > Render > Lens Flare and select 35mm Prime with brightness at 100%. Position it anywhere you want. After this, still in the new layer create more lens flares the same way only 105mm Prime with brightnesses around 15-40%.

Lastly if you would like to change the colors of the small "stars," select the magi wand tool (in main tools palette (top left), below the arrow) and set the tolerance (right below the menu bar) to around 10. Then just click on the star and go to Image > Adjustments > Color balance and change to the desired colors.
