Web hosting pricing
Hi
My uncle owns a farm and he wants me to set up a website for him which im going to do. All the farmers in his area get theirs done by a company recomended by anglia farmers. This host charges £45 to set up the hosting and an adidtional £40 a year. This of course includes all the usual stuuf like ftp, php and mysql tables (they said "we can set you up with them" which implys you have to pay more.
I dont have much experiance with actually paying for hosting as iv always gone with free hsoting things but to me this seems a bit pricey seeing you can get .com hosting for a couple of quid a year.
I am making the website but they said if we wanted we could pay an additional £400 for them to make a website which looking at websites hosted by them all look like they are from a template. Again i dont pay people to make websites but £400 for changing a template seems very pricey aswell.
Can someone advise me on whether these prices are too pricey or what??

That seems like a lot. I ran a hosting company for a stead (and still offer hosting on the side from my personal host) and we charged any where from $1.49 USD to $19.99 USD a month (depending on the plan). I can offer up hosting for you with the FTP, SQL Tables and such as well at a fraction of the cost if you like (though I only take PayPal ATM). thanks i will try. my uncle has decided that because all the other farmers are doing it with this host then it must be good. He says that the price probably means good customer service as he wants it so that he only has to fill an online form to update it as he dosnt know much if anything really about computers. As i said i will try and persuade him to go with a reasonably priced company but im not over confident.

$90 a month? If I read correctly it's a one time £45 fee, then £40 a year, just over £4 a month

yeah. i forgot to mention that the cheapest option of £45 setup allows 100mb space though they do give unlimited bandwith (apparently) as i catn imagine many people will flock to visit a small farms website to see a few pics of strawberrys and raspberrys.

anyways… sounds like the plan is decent… have you actually talked with or emailed the people or has it all been through your uncle, you may want to probe them with a few questions to make sure they really know their stuff. perhaps find out someone else who uses them and ask them questions too.

i spoke with the guy over the phone. he atleast was able to answer my questions on php, mysql and ftp and other stuff aswell as able to recite the versions.
