Web development - Beginner help plz!

Hey all,

First off, thanks for takin a look at the thread! I'm in need of some help.

I've always been curious as to how a website such as ebay.com is developed. What is involved in creating a website like that. What kind of hosting do you need and all of that good stuff.

Also, I was wondering if anyone could help a beginner get started in the right direction. I want to build a website, not necessarily as advanced as ebay, clearly :-P but I am interested in learning. Thank you all in advance!!

a site like ebay, google, yahoo, etc. would be coded in php or asp. They require massive and expensive servers, probably a few of them.

the way i started out with websites was just by making a geocities account, connecting to it with dreamweaver. to make a geocities accound just go to www.geocities.com and sign up for the free one. start with that, once you get the hang of it, you can either buy a domain and hosting, or go to domainlagoon.com

I've setup and created 3 - 4 free websites such as geocities, topcities and what not. I never really learned much from them and I've also built some in dreamweaver.

How did you connect to geocities via dreamweaver by the way??

not sure i remember, the site i made with geocities was in 6th grade, but i think the FTP host is geocities.com/username, username is username, etc.
