Generic drivers

Are there generic drivers for a wireless card or speakers? Can they even exist at all?

It's a really old computer and I don't know what the hardware is. The computer doesn't read it at all.

Just figure out what motherboard you have for that comp and you will be able to find your drivers.

It be nice to know what OS your using. If it's windows use the device manager and update the drivers via windows update.

It's windows xp, but they don't come up in the device manager.

Just open the side of your PC and read the name of the motherboard and google it ffs!

Use linux, try a ubuntu live cd if it wireless works out of the box problem solved.

update, in light of the old hardwareness several distributions specialise in lightweight (VERY fast) distros these ofcourse have lower likely hood of having an appritate driver.

But since the driver exists then chances are good you can compile it/download it.

You don't want to use Windows on old hardware anyway, see if a Linux live-cd (may I suggest Backtrack or Ubuntu) works with wifi OOTB.

1. What kind of PC is it (manufacturer or custom-built)? Model #?
2. What kind of wireless (onboard or PCI)?
3. Did it (the wireless) come with the PC?
4. Manual? Restore CD? Anything else to note?

I'd sit around and just watch you continue to screw your own thread, but you're online as if you're expecting some insight.

I'm actually trying to help a friend out who is about 500 miles away, but I'll try to answer as best as I can. 1.Dell, don't know model number 2.PCI 3.Yes 4.No manual, no restore cd, not that I think is useful 5.Just because someones;s name appears on the list doesn't mean they are actively online. Plenty of times I leave my computer on for hours connected to HBH.

Good. Get them to tell you the model number and look it up to get the specs. If the specs don't list a wireless PCI card as standard, then they'll have to open the PC, take out the card, and identify it… likely with your help, but it should be visible by a labelled chip on the top of the card.

When asking for technical help, post as much information as you can in the interest of getting the problem fixed. Not everyone's going to hold your hand.

If it's a Dell (Sorry to hear this) then just have him go to the dell support page and enter the model number, real simple. Incidentally the device manager should show what is not installed as unknown hardware (Yellow question mark).
