Rooting Level One - Teach Me

Okay, ive skimed through most of the topics for this looking to understand exactly what it is im doing. I get what im doing but i dont want to spoil it and just read through the the topics and end up passing it without learning anything.

Well is this a mentor request or do you need help with the challenge. You need to post what your having trouble with or your just gonna be ignored.

I got as far as nmap, but i dont really know much about these commands and such.
