Hi

Ive just found this site, fantastic place, ive been doing computer security for a few years and am currently studying cybercrime and security at university. I cant believe its taken me this long to find this place!

Anyway I dabble in programming at the moment, but im looking to ge in depth with a language, whats the best one to start with? I was looking at C and perl, they both look pretty good, and they cover most web and local applications.

Anyone have any other suggestions of what to learn first?

Thanks, jjbutler88

If you want to code applications, I really recommend C++ B)

Hey jjbutler88,

I would recomend Python :) Its a really good programing language to start with it is what i am learning now as my first programing language. (Not confusing PHP and MYSQL as a full programming language) It is really quite powerfull too and i would recomend then going on to learning some C++.

I am sure some of the Guru's could give better advice but this is my humble opinion from newbie to newbie! :P lol

Relentless.

:p @ uber0n, its pretty sick :D

and i recommend c/c++, cos it really is (IMHO) the best language out there. Perl, although useful, is a dependant lang as im sure you are aware, and unless you target *nix users most windows users dont have it installed.

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like I was on the right tracks, i got the impression perl is more for gettin the job done in everyday coding, but C/C++ is more for exploit code/cross platorm apps.

I have looked at python a while ago, now I am more interested, I will take another look.

Thanks again,

lots of exploits are coded in perl, so no harm in knowing it, C is always good to know.

well, shockingly, i'm throwing a vote in for python.

he he… it's a powerful versatile language that can be used for exploits (primarily *nix)…. and nubs.. lol

also can be used for web page generation (GOOGLE!!!)

quick to wirte, quick (for an interpreted language) to run, and easy to develop your own modules for. oops forgot to say that you can email or PM me anytime about python </rant>

and uber0n the caht client that you got points for… was that in the "code anything comp" i submitted achat client too.. i never did see any results for that comp. i was always curious about who won.. was it you?
