Without there being tracking software on the laptop the only other way I can think of is if the owner of the laptop put their postcode/zipcode on it using an ultra-violet marker pen.

That way police/other law enforcement would find the postcode/zipcode using an ultra-violet light and be able to return it to the rightful owner if found.

Kind regards, Zer0Man

i have a real answer.

ITS GONE.

unless there was something installed on it or you happened to remeber the ips and macs of it.

oh actually i wonder if theres a way to track it through the internet sorta like a reverse IP log thing.

i think i just lost myself to.

no because the IP changes according to where u are. If i had a laptop at my house it would be one IP because i use static but if i took it to work it would have a diff ip. The one my work uses.

wow. did he and his mom left them lying around? These stuff happens if you're not careful.

I've read where a stolen laptop was once traced down because the owner had folding@home installed on it, and when it connected to the internet, the cops simply traced the ip address down.

To anyone reading this, i have some tips:

a)write down the laptop's serial number. In case it's found, you can check it to confirm that it's yours.

b)open up the battery compartment, write your name with a sharpie or any kind of permanent marker. Sounds stupid, but when it was found, just open it up to confirm it's yours.

c)get a notebook lock. I have one myself, just in case I have to leave my laptop in a hotel room or lecture hall for a moment, i can just lock it to anything immovable.

that's the only options i can think for physical security. Sorry i can't help, but keep this tips in mind.

Okay really the only way to get this back (if it is not already parted out) is to know the MAC of the Laptop. This is individual to every NIC in the world. no two are a like. The serial number is good and all but really…who can't take off a sticker? I would have to say report this to insurance and get your self a new one…

yeah you're correct Aldar. But there are programs that can temporarily spoof the MAC address?

Let's hope they know the MAC address.

yes you can spoof the MAC in a few ways but the spoofing of a MAC cannot be over ridden locally ;) But again you would have to FIND the laptop to do this.

well pretty much im trying my hardest to find it, its not lost, im very close to finding it, shortly after posting this topic, my prayers wher answered, my tracking program which i might ad is very simple you just enter the computers name and ta da tracked, i have got the ip adress and im following the comp as best as possible, the thing is i dont have the exact location of the laptop so that puts a damper on things, also, i dont think the dumb tweeker that stole it is smart enough to part it out, i was also tracking the ip in command promt and they do have a firewall up, they where online with the computer, i just need to step up my game a little i suppose

If you have the IP, and they're using internet in their name your best option would be to contact the ISP they're using and tell them the situation, that they're using laptops stolen from you/your friend and see if you can dig any info up that way. I'd try that first at least, seems to be the path of least resistance.

well the think is, we know who took it, its no longer in her hands, she sold it we are sure, so, fuck that bitch shes as good as dead, but i tryd contacting the isp he told me to report abuse, call the police and get a supoena and to have him call the isp's number, what i would like to do is track it down though, and cause all hell… more my type of thing to do, im accually trying to mess with the computer right now in command prompt, im looking for good pages on here to find good commands, if anybody knows of any let me know

ask your friend if they still have the box and all the paper work that came with the laptop if he does then you can go to the cops and give them the serial number they will then go to every thief they have on record and ask them questions this works well when you live in a small town my friend used to jack stuff from cars and houses and got caught now when something goes missing the cops come to him and ask him to search his car shit like that or if hes heard about the specific job.

The first thing you need to do is go take the money out of her ass. Start by putting sugar in the gas tank, breaking windows anything that's gonna cost her. Then still call the police if it's a big set back for you.

Just wait until the the theif goes online. It will automatically sign your friend into his/her homepage then you can just contact the owner.
