I am pretty notorious when it comes to buying the wrong hardware for my comp…

I need a telephony hardware chip though and I have read of a couple of options, if someone possesses any wisdom about what type of chip to get for a:

phone: Panasonic KX-TG9331T http://panasonic.premiumstore.com/details/11231-5423/Panasonic-DECT-6-One-Handset-Cordless-Phones-KX-TG9331T.html

Linux distro: Ubuntu 8.04

Modem: ARRIS Touchstone Telephony Modem TM402P - two line VoIP [having quite a bit of trouble finding the chipset - I even called ARRIS but they are gonna bill me since I'm not an ISP = bullshit]

thats all the info I could think of getting please let me know if I need more. Very much appreciated.

Arris has been using the Legerity Chipset since 2003 for PacketCable VOIP equipment.

If you are just beginning to work with Asterisk, I would recommend AGAINST spending the ~$100 on a digital card for your system. But if you're serious about it, start off with the X100p from Digitnetworks (if you can find one), they usually run about $40. I've used the TDM400P with great success with a Slackware box, coupled with a Cisco 7940 phone.
