250gb sata2 16mb cache hard drive ATI radeon X1800 graphics card, if you can afford the X1900, even better Intel pentium E6600 processor, if you can afford a X6800 or so… good for you, but they're really not cost effective. 2x 1GB 533MGz RAM (corsair or kingston, 533MHz because the E6600 has an FSB of 1066) 16 speed DVD burner 19" flat screen Saitek Eclipse 2 Illuminated Keyboard Logitech G5 Gaming-Grade Laser Mouse Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard <– has dual PCI-E slots. But really any board which supports core 2 duo, sata and PCI-E Case is up to you..

Of course others will argue with this, but I recently built something similair to this and it kicks ass. I'm being told that that PC averages over 100FPS in CS:S and that you won't notice anything even if installing software while playing games.

Edit: oh and some if you need a wireless adapter, then a standard PCI card from belkin works wonders.

I recomend you don't cut corners with the case. I decided to save money on the case and the power button broke the very first time I pressed it. Being too lazy to send it back for a refund I decided to wire the reset button to be the power button and the actual power button doing nothing.

Edit: oh and some decent speakers and a decent headset. The board I suggested had 2.1 surround sound output as well as your standard stuff. Or get a PCI card with better surround sound, whatever.

That was one of the best posts I've seen on this site haha.

mrdj, look up each component and work around your budget. If you could specify that it would be helpful

Building yourself, you could get a pretty sweet PC out of that!

I suggest you contact whiteacid and hope he is helpful with more information. If not read the articles on this site about building the PC and see what you need to buy. Weigh up the products and prices.

uhm… 1k USD? ok, scrap what I wrote… a few months ago I spend around £930 on that, sure it's gone down now, but not by that much.

uhm…. if you have $1000 I suggest you save up until you have more. I wouldn't buy a new (gaming) PC unless it's at least got the E6600 processor, and if you get that processor you don't want to waste it by getting a crap graphics card or too little ram or a shitty hdd. Soo… save up.

Well dual processor cores isn't important for gaming. When you want ONE application to run good (The game) you want ONE processor core to deal with it, instead of using one of two cores for the game (if you're not running other applications in the background)… :p

Wireless mouse SUCKS!! You can game with a wireless, if it's 2000dpi or not. It's not as good as the "notwireless mouse" Don't get a optical, but laser like G5, or some razer.

I know what i'm talking about, a friend of mine "killersmeelf" have played in the CPL in Soa when he was like 19 or something.

Sry, but wireless is no good.

If you do build your own computer I suggest using NewEgg or TigerDirect for your parts and accessories. Good luck!

So if you get a E6600 then you have to have 533MHz RAM? I was going to get 800MHz RAM for when I build a comp with a E6600, thinking that would be faster, but i guess you can't do that? what would happen though?. But if I was to get the next best core 2 duo I suppose I could get faster RAM..

When choosing your monitor, if you're gaming, you really shouldn't skimp. Save up if you have to, until you get some more money. Make sure you have a super-low refresh rate.

Viewsonic makes a KICKASS 19 inch flat screen gaming monitor, 2ms refresh rate. Of course, this is best with gaming - it tends to be a bit bright, and movies/TV shows aren't the greatest, but if you're doing gaming then it's the shit.

I repeat what everyone said - BIG hard drives! I'm saving up to get my rig, and I'm putting in over 700 gigs (two 320's. Of course, I'm also going to have music and movies on mine). Games eat up space, and if you get enough, you wont have to worry about too much. Trust me, it's better to have extra then not enough.

The case… just make sure it has what you want. You don't have to drop a couple hundred to get a good one, of course, but don't buy a $30.00 one. I'm going with the Kandalf by Thermaltake - attractive, with tons of room. Of course, it's also 200 bucks…

An AMD Dual Core is probably what you want, all things considered. Intel and AMD have a mini-war going on, so prices are fairly nice.

A motherboard, of all things, is something you don't want to cut corners on. You can upgrade around the motherboard, but if your motherboard bites… well… you'll need a new one. It's cheaper in the long run, in my opinion.

I got an AMD Athlon 5000+ Dual core 2x1g DDR2 1X 512 DDR2 ram, 80GB sata 2 16mb cache hdd and a 200gb.. Abit KN9 motherboard.. and a ATi Radeon x1050 which isnt the best card but I havnt found a game that I cant play yet..

I agree nearly 100% with this system. I would swap out the 19" for a 23.1" Wide screen though…

lmfaooo. i completely agree. i got a question for u guys tho, its a tough one but i hope u guys can figure it out and help me.

i got the following stuff:http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/9876/untitledlz9.jpg i just bought 4 gigs of ram in 2gb sticks(patriot 533mhz). i already got 2 256mb sticks installed. I got 2 ram slots left. my question is, will my computer be more stable and faster with all 4 sticks installed or should i take the two old ones out due to their insufficiency?

Depends, some computers cant handle over a certain amount of RAM so it would be best if you could find out how much your pc can handle first ;)

im pissed off beyond mentioning. i jsut put in the 4 gigs of ram without the old 512 mb and NOTHING changed. it feels exactly the same in terms of speed. is that how ram is supposed to work? cuz everything is still slow as fuck. btw, when i check the properties it says i got 3.25 gb of ram instead of 4 but when i open up cpu-z it says i got 4096 mb of it. any ideas of wat can or is wrong? im a wiz at computers but hardware gets me lost deeper than walking into the amazon forest. i dunno wat to look for when i get a ram upgrade, to me everything looks and feels exactly the same. didnt play any games yet so i dunno about that but everything else just pissed me off pretty badly cuz it cost $120 for these 4 gigs. get em while the offer lasts @ slickdeals.net

ghost's Avatar

there are several things that contribute to computer speed, here are the main three:

  1. Processor
  2. RAM
  3. Hard drive speed

RAM basically controls how much stuff you can do. So you may only notice a difference when running a lot of programs. To make things open faster, get a faster processor and hard drive. To open a lot of things, get more RAM. RAM=How much stuff you can have open, basically.

thehacker3's Avatar

oh alright, im good with logic and believe it or not i figured that out on my own. the hard drive speed i had no idea about though. so i need a faster processor for faster speed?

ghost's Avatar

ya. the hard drive speed has to do with how fast the hard drive can spin the disk to read it, so faster it spins faster it can get your data.

In respoce to white acids comment on Dual Cores, id have to tell you that your wrong, most games take little or no advantage from dual core processors at this time.

Ideally for Gaming you would like something like this: (ok well this is what i would like)

Kick ass mobo, choose what you like, but make sure its socket AM2 and can take 4gigs + of RAM. Sli/crossfire support is a must. AMD Athlon64, anything about 2Ghz.

4*1Gb DDR2 RAM chips, make sure they are identical so you can use Dual Channel

2 500gb Drives in a RAID configuration. SATA or SCSI (if SCSI supports RAID i dunno)

SATA or SCSI DVD+-RW Drive (for the hell of it)

2 Nividia 8 series cars (identical models/memory sizes) OR 2 ATi x1800+ cards (Identical)

Any flat and wide monitor, TFT or LCD, less than 5ms responce and more than 1280*1024 res, perhaps even a HD TV with DVI-I support if you can afford it.

Any Logitech Gaming keyboard and Mouse. (laser wired) Gigabit LAN card (dont use your onaboard, get one with a LAN processor thing, takes pressure off the CPU, great for online games)

Creative Labs Xtreme Gamer X-fi with XRAM (amazing sound performance, takes pressure off the CPU, do not use your realtek onboard rubbish lol)

Note:

As far as im concerned, Dual core is a waste of time, i havent seen the second core do anything in task manager at all, ever! it all just goes on the first core. Totally pointless unless you have a multi-threaded game/application.

I have an Intel Dual Core T2060 533MHz processor and i have to agree, its great. Ok i now its not the best model but money is difficult with me and my system rarely lags.

Plus, on my CPU Usage (am running vista, but i wont go into that one :S) its pretty equal for both processors, so the thing about it dumping it all on one is bollocks.

EDIT: On my (1gb ddr2 of ram) the CPU usage is only at 7-~10% and i have photoshop cs3, two mozilla firefox windows, a 3.5gb download and 2 100 meg downloads all running simultaneasly, along with a software firewall, anti-virus, IM and all the shit vista dumps on you.

yeah about the hdds, i wouldnt get anything bigger than 250 gb. if that dies your screwed out of all that money and time

ghost's Avatar

My PC I mentioned ages ago is now a little outdated (for the latest games). There's now better motherboards (for instance with inbuilt 5.1 surround sound and that are cheaper), there's cheaper monitors (I agree with others, buy as big as you can afford) and HDDs are cheaper.

I disagree with stopping at 250GB though. The PC I built last summer had a 250GB hdd, that quickly filled up within 8 or so months. I bought another 500GB HDD for it which is just about enough. But the reason that is enough is because I have another PC with 1.2TB of storage which is where I keep all my stuff. Even that one is now filling up (less than 400GB left on it).

Of course I'm not your normal PC person, which is why if I can afford it I aim to buy another 4 1TB drives before the end of the year, though I'll set them up in RAID5 so I'll only get 3TB space from the 4 drives.

ok, a lot and i mean a LOT has changed between my last posts and now in terms of knowledge of hardware. im getting the following:

Yeah, I'd suggest NOT buying a PSU for under $40. That's something you should definitely spend some money on… you get a cheap one, and you're risking the health of all the other parts in the PC.

Well If I were you I would wait till I had more glue! Why waste money on inferior parts and end up with shit. Especially the PSU that's the heart of the system if it takes a dump it's not going alone. I've seen one short and clean out damn near a whole E-Machines one time. Wait and get something decent.

<Just a suggestion>
