Not that I know a whole lot about public game engines, but wouldn't the UDK be a better choice if you wanted a ready-made engine?
I'd never even heard of havok 'till you mentioned it.
I'm not starting a learning group. I learned that lesson. It would basically be sharing resources. Havok is actually very big. Its used in most valve games, like half-life, and in games like killzone and fallout 3.
