language choice

Hi all,

recently started to learn some programming, started with c (seemed like a good place to start), and did pretty well, but also tried some perl and really liked it, much more relaxed feel to coding in it. But I heard someone saying perl is on the way out, so I was wondering, does perl have a successor in the no nonsense everyday coding languages?

I was looking into ruby as it looks like it takes a similar approach to perl, but not actually written any yet. Anyone have any advice?

Cheers

yeah perl is really nice, but i intend to get pretty serious with it and dont want to put all the time and effort of learning into it only to find when I finish it gets replaced with ruby :p.

gave ruby a shot online (in brower) and looked good, im not sure if il need OOP but i gather you can make perl OO to a certain extent. Might just do both :P

thanks for the responses guys :D
