Suggestions for boxes

Hello all,

I recently came in to a couple of extra pc's. Two 1.6ghz 1gb 80gb hd

I was trying to think of a good use that others could benefit from. Any suggestions?

So far some of the suggestions passed to me were storing rainbow tables, various tutorials, old games/roms

Whatever the most popular, I will throw it togther and post the link.

an open area rooting practice ground? like just let people come and go as they please and do whatever they want.

do that with one, yes, but I personally like the idea of hosting a ROM server. I plan to set up my old 650mhz 256mb 16gb AMD system in my room as a server, if i can get my mom to let me have internet in there… WDF!?!

I would use it as a proxy for school (dynamic ip :p) and a file/web server, as well as maybe hosting a sort of hack-this-site kind of thing on it.

I say definitely put up those ROMs! I love retro games :p

and yeah, rooting is fun too.

You're lucky… I had to go through 5 computers before I even had 256m of ram, and I just now got a 10g hard drive, so I got 10, 6, and 1.5g drives in the beast :p

Oh, and it was using a pentium II 400mhz before I got the Athlon650

Yeah, I had to bust my butt to get the scratch together for my first pc. These ones I got from a friend, you won't believe it, but he swapped those two plus a 3.06ghz 1gb ram with 80gb hd and a dual layer dvd+/- rw

I have a fair amount of roms for nes and snes. I also have a few for n64.

Basically, rather than set up anything fancy, I would throw up a cheesy ftp or something. Then I'll post how to get to it.

As for the rooting, hmm… I'll have to think about that one. That's a good idea.

I might do that and periodically change the os. I can rotate through fedora, redhat, madrake, XP, 2000, Windows Server 2k3. Actually as I'm writing I think I really like the sound of that.

Yeah, ok then. I'll do that. I might be adding more pc's to my network in the near future so if you get any really cool ideas let me know.

For now, one ROM server and one rooting host. Thanks for the input!:)

Yeah I was gonna suggest rotating OSs too :p

Right now my box is running XP Pro Performace (XP crack with all the $hitware taken out, runs like a charm) and Xubuntu6 (which I'm having trouble getting XFCE to run on… dunno what's messed up this time, last time it was MBR/bootloader :( )

I love snes, I have one in my room with my old tv on top of my "pile of endless tech junk" :p

I could help setup the box for a wargame, if you're willing to give it up. Whaddya say, partna?

Fuck ROMs, do something useful with your time… like maybe using them as a cluster, for parrallel computing. You'll learn a lot doing that than controlling a plumber and watching him get fucked up by flowers.

Create scripts for automatic hacking protocols and let the computers battle against each other.

Prepare them with firewall/antivirus and code an AI which can adapt it's own code.

In short: do the impossible.

If I had some spare boxes i would try to make a cluster…even though i dont know how yet  actually im gonna save some money for that purpose… but still rooting and wargames are cool ideas as well…
