college = sux
I'm in college for almost two weeks now, but there are times that make me wonder if people knew much about computers other than turning it on, running windows, gaming, surfing and then decided to register for IT in college.
There was once during intro 2 programming class, the lecturer pointed out that assembly was dead.I was like, wtf? She obviously didn't know much about the latest. Gibson would've killed her. Windows was written in part asm, tons of viruses, NOD32 was written in asm, MenuetOS is written using asm. There are loads of developments using asm, she just didn't know(she mentioned that it was dead since the 60's..wasn't that disco?)
On the same class, she listed LISP as a query language and written in the 80's.Wrong.LISP was written in the 50's for AI research.
Once, we had a class on I/O, and a student listed hard disk and thumb drives as input devices(they're storage, for god's sake)
On another class, we listened to the history of computers and she mentioned that the PDP-1 only had switches for input. PDP-1 actually has a typewriter for input. If Steve Russell had to use the switches, he may have gave up, and no Spacewar for us then.
On another class, the topic was in basic networking and one of the things she mentioned was ping. She explained that ping proto was used to prop a network online.I don't want to know where the hell she got her degree. ping is used to test the connection from one host to another. In basic terms, it is used to see if a network is online and functioning properly. She will probably say that telnet and ssh are just the same thing(yes i know it is almost the same, but ssh traffic is encrypted)
Some of the topics in class for this semester is on security. I bet that they will all say that hackers are evil criminals and must be destroyed for common good(kinda feels like a superhero theme, actually)
Some of the classes were ok(A fave of mine was on how FAT works)
It actually makes me glad that I at least knew about computers before going to college, and that I also gained knowledge at HBH(1 up!!!) At least some of the knowledge can be obtained for free.
p/s: i actually kinda poked around the LAN and I found out that they were using some kinda generic router(can't even remember) my NIC is a realtek card, and they had File and Printer sharing(port 139) on. And it's also firewalled. Can anyone give a clue on what i can do next?
fuser wrote: ..and maybe I'll ask my lecturer to sign up for hbh accounts 100% stupid idea. hellbound hackers? She will probably think of it as a threat to change your grade. and you lose needed privacy.
and lots of people don't know much of anything. I think it's best to get over that concept quickly.
In Many Places a College teacher is nothing more than a failed professional. When I was in college for Network Systems Administration the only teacher who knew what he was talking about 100% was the Linux/PERL teacher. He was a guru in this shit! He told me to get extra marks to code a Brute Force IP Sorter (Which I did in PERL). Too bad I lost the code…I would post it in the bin
Anyways…Most College teachers are just people who work in the field…and anyone working in the field knows what I mean when I say there are very few people in the field who know WTF is going on in most cases.
Hope this was both educational and helpful
haha this was awesome. It also makes me think I should stay 1 up on as many classes as possible in my degree to avoid learning lies…hmm so what would happen if on a test there was an answer that was actually wrong like some of the stuff she taught you? do you put in the wrong answer she said or put in the right answer and correct her…
for many colleges it's true this does happen….
but my college professors are gurus… and they have my entire respects from me…. there is a professor who is out of industry despite the 30% pay cut, because he wanted to shape and change the feature of computing, which is students….
maybe that's why my school is 14th in nation for comp sci…..
and maybe that's why tuition is just about expensive as buying brand spanking new cadillac SUV for every year….
every year the navy has a course on teaching people to use the internet properly. one year a women said that google was the worst search engine to use because it pulls up to much stuff. she also said wikipedia is horrible to use because the articles are written by regular people and that they could be writting the wrong things.
so of course i challenged that and was yelled at for putting her out there in front of everyone.
LOL "good sucks because it pulls up too much stuff" that's what a search engine is supposed to do. i mean if it pulled up the wrong stuff then there could be an argument against it lol
but yeah it seems like your worse off when you try and correct someone then when you keep you mouth shut and let people think they're right…but when they're saying this in or to a group you want them to say the right shit even if you put them on the spot. it's better to have one ignorant person get embarrassed a little than to let the whole group learn something false…
Tutor: (regarding hex) A + B = F Me: No, its 15 Tutor: Dont know what number system your using (waving hands in mocking style) Me: Hex, your converting your result of 15 back into hex again Tutor: Nooooooo, its F The rest of the class: It's 15 (shown on laptop) Tutor: sorry Me: (walks out, never to return)

that's not entirely false…
i remember reading about a study that involves wikipedia… mainly what they did was observed IP addresses and what they are changing in wikipedia…
some contents that you may be interested about that study is follow.
-
there has been numerous defacement made by some companies to alter information for their own company or against rival company. (mainly Micro$oft and Apple)
-
Government's interference with some of the sensitive subjects, Area-51, 9/11, and Iraq war.
-
there were some stock company who may get convicted considering informations, and misinformations they posted for, or against certain companies.
my point is that wikipedia is not always true and not always reliable… it's excellent reference to some subjects, but it's unreliable to accept it as fact….
yea i wouldnt recommend introducing her to HBH…Cuz well We dont need anymore "How do i hack hotmail" forum post and if the students are just as stupid as the teachers at your college…well we will be getting alot of those…and a side note….a female IT? no hating on females….but i mean…i dont see that mixing well.

yeah my girlfriend used wiki as a source for a bit of information she used in here paper. turns out the information was false so lessen learned that you have to check with a few sources if you wanna use wiki for facts unless you already know it's true.
wow, thanks for posting in this old thread of mine..I was wondering what is everyone doing in real life, and poof the thread started again.
I'm now in my third semester, and the some of the lecturers still suck, but some are quite good. A professor once found out that I was using Linux, and he said to some of his students (he taught software engineering)
"This diploma student is using Linux! Why is it that you bachelor seniors stick to using Windows?"
So they all said stuff like Linux is hard to use, not familiar with it, etc. You know, what typical hardened Windows users perceive Linux as.
Sure is fun looking smarter than my seniors. ;) And the fact that I'm 17. I'm the youngest in my course.
At least I can pull some good grades.

Anyway, I reckon the reason we have so many stupid people teaching IT in schools is that, usually, people that are good with computers can earn a lot more money in a company or doing their own thing than they can in teaching. My school in switzerland doesn't even have computer science as a subject, because they can't find anyone to teach it, even though there's a few tech and programming companies based in the same town.

What are you on about? Females are a huge roll in IT. My Computer Operator at my work Place is female. My old manager was female. Shall I continue? There are a lot of females in IT. You are just too bone cold dumb to realize this! Please go drink a vat of cyanide and curl up in a corner.

Yeah I agree with AldarHawk.
