Media wise: Mittnick or Mckinnon

For those who don't know Mckinnon was indicted by a US court in November 2002, accused of "hacking" into over 90 US Military computer systems from here in the UK.

Online: g00ns - Funny reasons Locus7s - Bad reasons Anarchy99 - Controversial reasons

I'd say admins on sites like Skarecrow, Psychomarine, XeroX etc are well known.

I'd beg to differ. Personally Skarecrow, Psycho and the others are well known in our circles, start doing some traveling and you'll meet some more (A99 and Locus7s are hardly well known, I am insulted that you included them to be fair)

i'd have to vote for mckinnon. although its only recent. but due to the media frenzy and bit controvesry over him getting exported.. even non-hackers and computer illiterates know his name.

famous amoungst hackers, theres always The_Mentor (for obvious reasons).

Exactly what I meant.

I included the well known hackers (mckinnon and mittnick) then on pretty much every hacking community I go to knows of A99&Locus7s, for the same reasons as I do.

And there's gobby, the gnome! Who doesn't know his famous last words: "Gobby gobby gob gob, hacking to the top top"

I'll never forget his red gnome hat :). Ah, the lost times…

I would say that the best hackers in the world, are not known by anyone other than their own hacking group (if they have one), and perhaps the feds. Of course their might be other people that know them, but as a hacker, those people don't. So most likely no one around here has a clue to who any of the people are, not trying to insult anyone, nor claim that I know any, but it's simply something that seems quite true.

around these sites you'll hear the name of Jeremy Hammond, HTS founder.

Id ahve to go with The_Mentor

I've heard about ne0h, he seems to be a very good hacker. I mean, it's pretty hard to say who is the "best", cause I mean, the best at what? Rooting? Web Application Exploits? But I mean, I get what you're saying with asking this question, and I'd like to know the same thing, but yea. But anyways, I think the absolute "best" hacker in the world is probably unknown because he/she (yea, haha) IS the best. The best hacker in my mind wouldn't get caught because he's so good. And who knows, maybe the best hacker ever hasn't even started hacking yet, eh? But yea, I go with ne0h, from what I've heard of him, he's pulled some crazy shit, and hasn't gotten caught.

EDIT: Re-read the question. Realized the whole famous thing. I'd probably have to say Mitnick or The_Mentor, not exactly that they're the best, just the most well known to the public and such.

I second that! The truly great hackers are the ones that nobody knows exist. Since the thread was actually asking who the most famous hacker is…I'd say Mitnick and The_Mentor. Perhaps you could throw in ZeroCool if you wanted. ;)
