remote file access

In about 2 weeks I'm going out of town, and I'm taking my laptop, but I have files like movies and different torrents on my desktop I want to access from my laptop, I know of pc anywhere, but it costs money, so i was wondering if anyone knows of a program similar thats free?thanks for any help.

VLC runs in Windows too (and all other major OS'es).

What torrent client do you use? Some of them have WebUI's so you can control them from other comps.

As for file transfer, you could install an FTP server or something, and then FTP to your comp and download the files (or just transfer them to the laptop before you leave)
