Need Advice

Ok so im intending to buy basically a completely new system and im having a hard time choosing between AMD and Intel, I have always been with AMD and had no problem but by what i have read in the recent news is that AMD is quite behind intel at the moment (as mostly they have been) I think they will recover because of their recent merging with ATI which would help them quite abit but yeh if they release there new stuff fast, since Intel is already planning to release 45 nm chips next year.

I'm intending to wait till AMD releases their barcelona 65nm tech qaudcore chips and see what reviews and test are made of them in comparison before i buy anything, but at the moment im having hard time deciding between the two.

So guys tell me who you think is better AMD or Intel and which one are yous' with? (I hope no one uses MAC hehe:D)

Depends what you want it for and how much you're willing to spend.

I built a system for myself a few months ago. Its a Core 2 Duo E6600 with 2GB RAM and an X1950XT. The Core 2 Duos (at the time) completely out performed the AMD chips and the E6600 even rivaled the FX62 (which cost more than twice the price).

Best place to get yourself a benchmark is Tom's hardware page…. you can compare processors performance when doing graphics, unziping, playing games etc.

AMD will evetually overtake Intel again but do you want to wait? What you get with the Intel COre 2 Duo's is more lvl 2 Cache than you do with the AMD's (currently).

I recently (few months back) built a system with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB Giel 800mhz RAM and a Geforce 8800GTX…It is awsome! the intel chips are great :D .

You say you are tempted to wait for the new AMD release, this will be the case all the time, something new is always going to be released so the longer you wait the better CPU you get but if you keep waiting you wont end up getting anything.

Just decide when you need your PC and what type of technology you want. Read Reviews and compare the different options.

Hope this helped.

Well i have done my research, i just wanted to wait for the AMD's barcelona chips which are coming out mid year, if they are good ill get that but if its not ill get Intel xeon quad core.

But yeh my system is going to be about 4.5 grand in price i put everything together myself in all my comps, but if you exclude the LCD monitor id say about 4 grand. (hehe i have alot of money so cost is no problem for me ever). Intel chips are also great for overclocking which is good but yeh i just wanted to see what everyone else thought was better.so after july is when ill get my new system, Also if new 680 chipset motherboards come out for AMD that will be good, because at the moment only intel has them.

But yeh i don't wait for new things to come out always just things which are going to come out really soon :D

(so ill either get a AMD quad core or a INTEL quadcore) barcelona is the AMD quadcore and Xeon is the Intel quadcore (which is why im waiting for AMD :))

i know qaudcores at the moment are an overkill for what you would do since you would have to be DVD decoding, playing a game, burning a DVD and doing something else inorder to utilise the whole power of the qaudcore

hmmm… I think you should be concered more in thanking people on this forum for help than the fact that you have lots of money.

Leaves room and slowly shoots door

lol

@relentless, im sorry to see that you have misinterpreted me, since i was just stating the price range im looking for and thats all i said that money is not a problem and that i have enough of it so i don't see how that was offensive to you or anyone else in the forum.

And about being concerned about thanking people just because i don't spit out automatically that im thankful for peoples opinions does not mean im not grateful for them and that im not going to thank them, i was waiting if anymore opinions would come in and then after that thank everyone.

If its so important to be thanked right away then i will.

Thankyou relentless and all other people that have contributed their opinions and have given me advice on intel and AMD, i guess i will wait and see in july when AMD's barcelona chips come out which is not to far from now. If AMD fails to impress me then i guess i will get intel :D

after reading this thread i have to say i dont think you've made a particularly good impression on this forum… generally people thank other people for their help and advice, people dont boast, especially about trivial things such as money.

i say go with intel. right now i have a p4 with a gig of RAM, and it runs very nice. soon i am gonna buy a dual core intel w/ 2 gig of ram laptop which will be very nice :) AMD just seems to be the underdog, and right now is definately lagging behind imo.

@luken 95 im sorry if it appeared as boasting which i didn't intend it to be, Since i typed instead of verbally said it. If i were to say it to you in person that i have enough money or alot of money it wouldn't sound like imboasting just merely saying that money is not a problem for me (basically i beleive i could've worded it better but i was certainly not trying to boast in anyway about having money) because i work bloody hard for the money I earn (im not rich prick that gets money for doing nothing).

@chislam yeh i feel quite sorry for AMD at the moment, because they are losing, but if i buy intel then they will still keep losing hehe:D. Its been a while since i upgraded my computer, it has 1.5 gig ram, runs pretty well but is quite slow for what i do, since i do alot of dvd encoding and editing of various things for family and friends and at the same time i want ot be able to do something else which i can't since my processor is a single core.

I was thinking of getting a laptop but im not much a fan of laptops since you can upgrade Desktops to be much better, but i guess ill get a laptop eventually since it will be useful for the next year of my uni course.

But yeh ill wait till july and thanks ill consider Intel its going to beslightly more expensive because of the new motherboards that have been released with intel.
