18 months suspended sentence and 80 days community service!!! bloody hell! all that just for using his neighbours wifi.

now obvioulsy im wrong in thinking, using your neighbours wifi occasionally is the norm!

now i know its singapore, but .. jesus, thats such as harsh sentence to give for such a petty "crime".

and chances are it wasnt even encyprted or password protected.

so heads up. thats what you get if you borrow your neighbours wifi to download your latest dvd!

Well, it's not weird. Politics think like this: Crime down, happiness up.

So if they can eliminate a crime, they will. Even if it's "just" using your neighbors wifi.

yeah but serioulsy having that kind of sentence is ridiculas.

surely with neighbours its a simple case of

"sorry mate, yeah i used yoru wifi to download my porn. i'll stop it now. look… here i made you a nice cake to say im sorry. and i'll wash your car for a month."

end of story, problem solved.

You obviously know nothing about singapore then.

They have very strict laws which leads to more freedom and in general happier people. You may think there laws odd but they think ours are.

Good sentence

The people in Singapore are aware of the laws. Braking one is at your own risk.

Fair sentence indeed.

well uk just sent a guy to be sentenced to probably 70 years jail time in a place known for it's brutal jails, and he's going to be trialed as a terrorist, just because some dumb admin didn't do his work and patch up the system..

as for that guy serves as a warning to us all keep using your neighboor's line but change your mac. =)

Jeez…I told my neighbor I was thinking of getting wireless internet. She said not to bother, I could just use hers. So I went out and bought her a better antenna for her wireless network and now I use her internet for free.

18 months though? Gall-durn-tootin'. Seriously…that's screwed up. Exactly why I'm against big government.

Don't get me wrong…technically what he did was against the law, but I fail to see anything morally wrong with piggybacking off someones wireless internet. Now if he'd been using his neighbor's internet to access her personal computer and steal info off her…of course his sentence is justifiable. But for looking at myspace and downloading porn? No I don't see a reason for that kind of sentence.

Just my 2 rings worth

lmao! bit harsh, but so long as it is the normal punishment for that crime then it's okay. I mean to say, did he know what the punishment is for being caught?

Law and moral are separated. Law follows rules, moral follows opinions. Judges tend to not have opinions, but follow the law, for obvious reasons.

Although I don't agree that the sentence he/she received (shouldn't be that harsh), I still think it was against the law and a punishment is due. But seriously..they went over the top on that one. :|

Do you people not understand the concept of different countries having different punishments for different laws.

I think that they have the right to be strict and that was the right decision

Yes. True. But what are laws but someones' morals that have been turned into rules?

were not questioning the judge's following of his country's laws. or the right for other countries to have stricter laws. what mrcheese is saying is that it doesnt make sense for their parliament to pass a law that would be so harsh on such unimportant a crime. so wether the judge has good/bad morals or good/bad law following skills is not the issue at hand. rather the singapore politcians that decided to go all out on small-time crime ofenders

EDIT: i dont know of anyone noticed but the kid was in probation, which explains a lot. he wasn't a first time offenders and the harsh singapore policeand judicial system was probably out to get him on any small thing and he fell right into their hands with the 'illegal' wi-fi using.

Yeah, I agree with Mozzer. My little 2 cents though: If a law works in a certain country, and keeps order and justice in that country, despite it being harsh / retarded in our country, it doesn't matter, because it works in their's. But yeah, by our standards that is a bit harsh.. Practically any kid in the U.S. steals wifi if they are able to.

:o can we say fuck my life. I dont think its worth all the trouble he got and is facing but than again.. I would of never admitted it.

i can understand there is a culture difference but the reason people are posting is because it is so dam extream. Do you know what it takes to get 18 months in the uk / us? BIG difference

ghost's Avatar

Yes, I know I live in the UK, doesn't mean I can't empathise with other cultures

ghost's Avatar

Yes it is a big sentence for such petty crime… But look at Singapore there is barely any crime… Compared to the US…

Exactly, strict laws, less crime more freedom

I think that is how their logic works
