Well hello there, nice to see the site back up etc etc.

Rightio down to the reason I am posting this.

In History, (yes in school, the subject history) we have been told to choose a subject to do a little project/presentation on.

So I decided to do Hackers.

My question is going to be something along the lines of

"Hackers, bad cyberpeople, or portayed badly in the media?" Well something along those lines.

And I need "sources" from people on both sides of the arguement. So I would like you guys to be my pro hackers people. Basically, any help on what YOU (yes you personally) think a hacker is, what you do as a hacker etc will be a lot of use to me.

So yeah thats it.

Thanks in advance all.

ps. Cheese if you read this, you do not mind me robbing bits of your article do you? just quotes to use?

pps. also any good sites with good definitions for and against are very welcome!

No offence but using hackers to be your pro-hacker people seems like a false argument. Its like saying

Child Rapists, bad people, or poorly represented by them media?

Then for your argument pro child raping having child rapists. Its a flawed argument.

I am not in anyway saying hacking is a bad thing or saying that it is like being a child rapist but it is a flawed argument.

In my opinion it would be better to use the argument of actions of non-blackhat hackers rather than their opinions

BTW: This is my opinion and does not necessarly mean you should even bother reading it!

ah you guys are not to be my only sources you see, I am doing a LOT of research, and I am using you guys as "experts" you see.

ANd thanks cheese. Ill copy and paste it onto my harddrive now so that I can re-read through it later and sort it all out.

cheers people so far.

OK then here's my bit

Hackers

I believe that hackers are a group of people who all have similar interest in one area of the world. Computers, more specifically the internet. They meet people the same as them and the form views. Some people become missled to their cost and become evil hackers. The larger innocent population of hackers do not break any laws and therefore fail to make the news. How often have you seen on the news

"Successful eBay Transaction" but how many "Hacker steals credit card details during money transfer on eBay" do you see?

hackers are the protectors of the internet, and all that involve it. without finding a way past something, there would be no way to advance.

Adding to this.

When people do find a way past and try to help they get shunned and rejected. They sometimes then turn to causing mayhem on the world they can control

I believe a hacker is someone who enjoys finding flaws in peoples code and depending on their ethics they report it, but some choose to use the falws and exploit them. A hacker is a person who finds their fun on the internet where freedom of speech is truely alive. Most hackers are people who are pretty good with computers and spend quite a bit of their time on the internet either talking to fellow hackers, finding exploits or causing trouble

okay so far a hacker seems to be ONLY someone who uses the internet from what i read.

How I see it a hacker is what it was originally termed to be. One who is good with electronics and likes to "hack" them and learn more. A Hacker is like an information broker. If the person learns something they will share it to a certain extent. A Hacker is one who is always in the need to know and wants to surpass every obstical thrown in their way. Yes most of the time a hacker is portayed as a young kid sitting in the dark witha cigarette hanging from his/her mouth with no light but the glow of their monitor in the room. But this is only a SMALL portion of the true word. I find that knowledge of computers is good BUT the knowledge of Electronics will further you even more in becoming a hacker. Most people who are Black Hats are not "hackers" per se, they are "Crackers (or Criminal hackers)". A White Hat is someone who will search for security holes and report them, thus keeping them out of the Criminal part of things ;)

In all a Hacker is an individual who gets joy from learning and striving in all they do.

i dont know if this is helpful or not but heres my openion. it dosnt matter what others think hackers are. we created the internet thus it should be ours to do what we please. then we got other people who came in and filled it with porn and spam. then there bullshit like myspace -.- i dont mind thats all of that is there but its like we made our own place to be and were being kicked out of it. sry, prolly not helpful at all but there it is

(the american military made the internet :-)

Though by many a definition, any computer expert, no matter what they know about computer wise, as long as they are an expert, is a "hacker"

Wrong, the american military did not make the internet it was created in CERN!!!

Not many people actually know that. ;-)
