Take a penny...

I have always wondered how the "give a penny, take a penny" system works. Do you take a penny to make up the change when you pay for something? and add chnage you cant be bothered to have in your wallet in there? This might seem quit pointless but I can't find any references to it on the internet and I heard it on The Simpsons recently when homer becomes a cop and Apu says you desearve to take a penny but that makes it sound like you just take money???

if you buy something and it costs like a $1.02 , instead of having to break another dollar you can just use 2 pennies in the tray.

and when you are feeling nice, when you get pennies back you just put them in the tray

yeah that's how it's sposta work…Though someone REALLY smart would just steal the whole 8 pennies in the dish and be 8 cents richer! MUAHAHAHAHA! NEW DEVIOUS PLOT I SHOULD CARRY THROUGH! XD

the concept is for people who do not like change (me included) to leave the excess change there(normally anything silver (5 cents +) vanishes into the merchants pocket though) this allows the people who are short changed to be able to make up the difference and not have to leave the store with nothing when they were short a few pennies.

one time when i was little it just went into the store and bought 5 cent candies with the penies that where in the tray.

I read a story the other day about a SE who managed to get a phone sold to him for a penny, then paid with a penny from that draw. He managed to walk away with a free phone.

Kinda cool, I reckon.

I have been to places in Europe that cant be bothered to give you any small change so they give you sweets / candy instead :p
