IP addresses

Ok here is the story. My friend set up a Counterstrike server on a computer at his house. After he got the computer working he connected it to the internet and started the server. His status on xfire said. "The server is up and the IP is 192.168.0.2 so I instant message him and tried to explain that he's giving out wrong information by telling him that thats the internal ip address. He replies and says no its not thats the external. I tell him how 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255, & 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 are all reserverd IP addresses and are used for a multitude of different things. He then replies and said, "Well my friend set up a server and gave me its internal ip address and I could connect." I then say, " No you didn't unless you were at his house or he was stealing your internet connection." He's like, "Whatever." so I would like an outsider to please explain this to him in a way other than I have. If anyone would write up an explanation I will direct him to this page and show him that I'm not making this stuff up. Any information is appreciated

Thanks, Lnce

(P.S. I looked around and found that there arent any very useful sites that explain IP addresses thouroghly maybe someone that posts here could write up an article for HBH.:))

Just tell him the simple way; If you could really host a server with your local IP adress, then there would be a LOT of servers with the same IP (129.168.1.4 fx) and then; wich of the would you join?

But in the end he will realise it anyway; noone will be able to join his server
