Girls And Computers

Does anyone else notice that there are a great deal more male then female computer geeks? Its a bit depressing, most girls don't know the first thing about computers or the internet or hacking.

Do any of you guys have any theories on why not? Sometimes when I surf geek chat rooms, or forums like this, I feel really… you know, alone. I know of maybe two girls on this site besides me.

And its more rare (From my gatherings of other sites) to find an attractive girl who knows a computer. Any thoughts on why?

Possibly how male geeks often treat women…like sex toys rather than people.

I've found that if I respect women and take an interest in them, they will often treat me the same. And the ones who don't–geekdom simply acts as a filter for the bad ones :)

As a sidenote, my girlfriend is a geekish hacker type.

Welcome to the world of the nerds, where girls are hard to find, and when we do find them, we are eather crazy about them, or scared. :D

Well, Probably because women dont expect to learn anything. Women acctualy rely on the man to be smart and successful, while they take care of the children or whatever they want. Its nature. Male provides, while female takes care of the household ;) .

But I dont care all that much, because Im fine with this one hot chick at my school, and what an amazing voice she has :D .

Thats completely true, but most of them like to talk about themselves. So you give your ears to them and let them talk. It works and you hear soo many funny stories.

As for chicks (the majority), they don't give a crap about hacking. All they care is how the look and chat 24/7 (atleast from where I am)

Maybe in the olden days, now many woman don't depend on the man. Some even make more money than the man of the house.

Its all about your attitude, if you are outgoing then they will like you. [/quote]

Thats really true; most girls only care about talking on the phone and how they look. Stupid mall rats.

Iunno well i'm a girl…and a pathetic hacker:P lolz I find that we start this kind of thing to prove that we can be just as smart as any guy hacker, sometimes even better at it….but i find that me and most other girls i know tend to change our minds alot…it'll be like hackingHackingHackingOoh wait I just realized that I like this better….other thingother thing*… yea lolz…Iunno I find that girls change their minds about this kind of thing more often. Actually, I'm surprised I'm still hacking! it's been a whopping 3 months…mind you, i did stop half way through to take up phreaking…so i sorta stopped hacking for a while and phreaked….now i do both…but stopped phreaking for a while cuz the lead fumes from all the solder started going to my head… But yeah…Iunno i have 2 'hacking buddies'(as i like to call them…lmao) one's a girl, and one's a guy. There used to be another guy, but he has random mood swings (haha prolly PMSing lolz) and just decided he doesnt like me…. lol oh well not like he was a lot of help anyway :P But yea…see, i change my mind alot…like i changed the topic of this post several times…I get side-tracked easily…But anywho i like hacking and haven't given up yet…so i'm proud.

I'm a girl!! Over here! jumps up and down

I think too many girls, at a young age, give into the sterotypes of who they should be, and never get involved with computers as a result. It's sad really, we're just as capable if we try. I think that in time, the scene will slowly balance out and have much more girls, I hope.

heh.. i have a lot of comments to make on this subject…

Well, Probably because women dont expect to learn anything. Women acctualy rely on the man to be smart and successful, while they take care of the children or whatever they want. Its nature. Male provides, while female takes care of the household .

heh.. your joking right? these are the days of feminist… where we believe we can do as much if not more than men. and we try to prove it too..

Thats really true; most girls only care about talking on the phone and how they look. Stupid mall rats.

not really… i love the mall and shopping and talking on the phone.. but i also love computer related stuff and politics… and i know a lot of people who are similar.. just because a person cares about how they look doesnt mean they dont care about anything else.

Does anyone else notice that there are a great deal more male then female computer geeks?

ah why the term computer geek? i hate that word… i would probably kill someone who ever called my a geek. thats probably what turns most girls off to computer stuff… they are afraid of being classified as a nerd/geek

You're a geek get used to it!

You see, I've come across situations (not necessarily computer related) where a girl is better than a guy at a traditionally guy-related activity. Then the guy gets all pissy and shitty with the girl. They'll come up with a shit load of reasons, but it all boils down to the fact that they think it makes some sort of statement about their masculinity.

That's one of the reasons that girls are maybe not as accepted in to computing, as society sees it as a guy orientated activity.

When anyone's better than you at something, regardless of gender, just try to learn off them. If you're a guy, it makes you no less of a man.

I've met a lot of girls who know a lot about computers, quite frankly, I kinda like it that there are more girls who are willing to ask why their source isn't compiling correctly…

But it kinda pisses me off when some popular girl says that not only is she a geek, but she also wants to make you believe that she goes out with geeks because she likes the intelligence.

Then you look around…

And realize that every one of her past boyfriends, and the current one, cannot be in any way considered a geek, at all. I'm talking full-blown idiots.

I'd love to see more girls hanging out with geeks, or even considering themselves geeks. I'm thrilled when I'm asked by a girl an honest, in depth, question about something on the computer.

But quite frankly I think that the current condition of the female mindset (in the majority) is that talking on the phone and chatting and whatnot (not bad things) are more important than trying to figure out how all those little programs on the computer work. It's not that there's a problem, it's just that the attention to this field isn't there.

But then again, I've not got a lot of room to talk about most girls..

Every girl I know is gay (and I've got quite a few female friends, ranging from 17-40).

You're lucky im only ever asked a stupid question like 'come help me i cant find whe File menu' which really pisses me off so i just say no and go away and yes i agree i wish girls would hang out with geeks and how that some of them are actual geeks themselves that'd be awesome

yea i notice when someone on here says they're a girl everyone is shocked and the mojority think they're shit at computers just cause they're female, which is my opinion is wrong, people shouldnt judge people on race, age, sex or anything judge them on their actions, or maybe their knowledge of computers.:) that is my view. not toally on subject just thought id share my opinion^^

hey im new, was reading here for a while anyway i think the reason there aren't many girls that really interested in computers is that they don't have motivation.. i mean a lot of parents let their little girls play with dolls so they think computers are a "boys game" and don't even try to understand it, while boys know from a young age that they SHOULD love computers if they want to be cool.. btw im a girlB)

Well spoken but sorry to say I disagree. My cousins a programmer she didnt need motivation from her parents my mum has a website no motivation basically none of the females i know got any motivation wether they're 15 through to 45

ok, i have 2 points to support the above statement ^^^

  1. Ok me and some freinds are in this group who get together with girls and guys from other towns and stuff, and recently there was a basketball tournament organized for the guys. so one of the girls asked why no girl tournament and the person who was running it said that there had been a girls tournament a few years prior, and the girls were focuesed the 1st game and then gave up and didn't care afgter that

2)Whenever i go bowling, or mingolfing, or anything like that wiht my sister she'll be doing really well and be kicking my ass and then like after a half hour passes she'll stop trying and go talk to a freind on the phone

Those 2 points are some reasons why many girls don't participate in computer related things and/or sport related things

ghost's Avatar

some girls, yes, but also some guys are that way too.. im totally completely focused in the things i actually care about.. and i know quite a few guys who flip flop so much its insane… i dont really think theres a generic reason to why there is more guys than girls.

but i do think it started out as primarily, a guy thing… and though its not anymore.. people still maintain that thought.

ghost's Avatar

yeah i agree. I mean, I do give up a lot, but I'm the most computer-literate person in my family, even though my dad THINKS he is, but yeah, Iunno I'm not motivated at all…erm, wait…I don't remember what I was trying to say.

theory 1: lazyness :o to be fully honest some girls are straight out lazy… i have helped so manny of my friends with computer related problems and every boy i have helped looked into what i was doing, asked some questions and figured out how to do it on their own. the girls on the other hand walked away and thanked me when i was done

theory 2: lack of interest :D most kids get hooked on computers because either there cool new machines or because they played alot of games on them and want to know more… well if youve noticed not manny computer games are geared twards girls so that may contribute to why girls dont get as involved as guys

ghost's Avatar

some guys are damn lazy too…You have nothing to base the "fact" that 'girls are lazy' on that doesn't also apply to dudes

ghost's Avatar

To say that only girls are lazy and change their opinions often is stupid. Plus, that just about describes me perfectly, and I love computers. I'll start writing a big program, get about half of it done and then change my mind and start something else on a whim. I do just about no homework and if its a weekend I'll get up at about 1:30 pm.

I'm lazy, workshy and fickle. But somehow computers maintain my interest, so even IF you're correct about girls being lazy and that they flip-flop, then not only does that not necessarily mean they can't be interested in computers, but also that the same goes for guys as well.

clears throat dont put word in my mouth. if you will notice i called them "theorys" meaning they have no scientific proof and im not trying to pass them off as "fact". also many guys are lazy two i never said they werent im just saying every guy i have helped asked about what i was doing and how to do it and every girl i helped totaly ignored what i had told them

i have to totaly agree, my parents wouldnt let me play with 'boy toys' when i was younger, well they did but didnt like it at all, i mean instead of liking barbi dolls i loved playing with toy cars and cranes, but my mom still got my the barbis, then i would tear them apart :P and now and days my mom still hates be being on the computer none the less learning to hack. But i think she now realizes that im not a girly girl. and im willing ot admit im a geek ;) and so are most of my friends

Nothing against you or anything, but I'm sorta strongly against prejudism and discrimination, and just because you've met some lazy girls, I don't think it's right for you to bias your opinion on all of us based on that. I realize that you have the right to say what you want, and if that's your opinion, then I guess I have to respect that, even though i disagree. And for the record, the plural of 'theory' is 'theories,' not 'theorys'… looks like I just met a guy who's too lazy to check his grammar. But I don't want to start a stupid fight over this, so w/e…

I think that generally people think computers are something girls arn't interested in. Personally, i don't know any girls that are interested in computers, but looking at just this site, and others, its obvious it isnt just a boys thing. I mean, just think if we hadn't started this topic, or the one where you post your pictures, or others like that. If no-one knew if someone was a girl or a guy, it wouldn't matter. Thats one of the things about a community like this. It doesn't matter wheater your male, female, black, white, christian, muslim…. you're judged by what you know and what you say. That way, there's A LOT less prejudice about what you look like, and you are respected or hated because of what you do. It's you choice.

Boys and girls are sterotyped from birth. If your a boy, you like the colour blue, cars and sport. If your a girl, you like the colour pink, dolls and shopping.

Thats what people have got used to, and you grow up with it, thinking it. If your a boy, and you like something thats generally thought a girls thing, then your gay.

And…. ive run out of things 2 say :P

I personally get along better with girls because of the kind of guy i am. So after like 1 or 2 days of talking to a new girl we can become real close friends and she'll open up 2 me and tell me anything (works great for social engineering purposes, not that i've tried to demolish the lives of any annoyances at school or anyhthing :P).

As for girls and computers, i guess once a girl passes the ages from like 13-15 and they havent started with computers, they get attatched 2 something else (i.e. boys, guitaring, shopping, other main hobbies that i can write 9 pages on). So for most girls that do get into the "nerd" side of computers (and i hate using the term "nerd") they turn out to be the few who tend to be more like men and at one point in life hit the point where they are to occupied with computers to care about there bodies or wut they look like.

Now the other few who find computers as a co-hobby aside the usuals they tend to be the ones who care for themselves and can stop using the computer and have normal intervals of usage not like most men who stay on 24/7 or attempt to.

Going through the post ur pic topic, i found that there are like 2 or 3 "hott" girls on HBH.

SimplySolitary_ and Hackthis59, and i beleave there was another one (not sure) for example are pretty, but by the looks of it, they use computers as a co-hobby (or so i beleave?)

Anywho, this has been my 2cents on girls and computers and the woman amongst us.

EDIT: As for who ever stated "guys go crazy when a girl is around in a "nerdy" community. thats not 100% true. i just take a woman in the community as another friend to be made. that statement alone means ur treating woman as if they dont deserve the same knowledge we do.

Im off now to get my flee bath so peace out.

I'm 50/50 its just so hard basically its a ration of 0.5:0.5 seeing as how half of 1 is 0.5 and the ratio would be 1:0 or 0:1 depending
