Hmm just found this site firefoxmyths .com

Just wondering what everyone's opinion is of the site and of firefox. Do you think firefox is made to be better than it really is? If it is, what would you use in it's place? IE? Opera? or something else?

(sorry if this has been previously posted)

I have always found firefox faster on a cold start. It is the reason I used it when I had dial-up, because IE took forever to load and often would just freeze up. Many of the points on that site are correct though. As far a security goes, its just a false sense of hope that someone needs a key to open the lock. IE is definatly more stable on long term usage in my opinion. I can run IE7 for weeks at a time and not have to restart my computer because a browser component has failed. Firefox often stops loading things (usually flash) that I use on a daily basis and the problem wont correct itself until I reboot. But overall I really like firefox and so i'll continue to use it. I'm not directly paying to use the browser, so I see no reason to complain much about its shortcomings.

I go pretty bored of reading through the myths, but being a web developer I think it's important to write valid code. And from what I have read, Firefox is more strict on validation than IE. So it is more correct to use Firefox I say.

While I agree that Firefox is better than the rest of the browsers, my experience has been that Opera is the fastest browser… even when compared to Firefox 2 w/ Fasterfox. If Opera had the extensions Firefox had, I would use it in a heartbeat as my default.

I've always seen it where IE was the problem child of web development, though. This is due to two main "faults" of IE: strict adherence to the W3C specifications and blatant disregard for space considerations (e.g., the box model hack).

Some examples:

  1. Certain elements cannot have a name attribute.
  2. Javascript DOM referencing must be done differently in IE (className, style.cssText, filter alpha opacity, etc.)
  3. Block-type elements floating to the left or right cannot have a margin in the same direction.

There are plenty more, but it's early. For now, I'll just say that web design and development for any browser other than IE is rather pleasant. The end of every web development project will always be browser compliance (i.e., make IE happy).

It seems that through experience most people stick with firefox. That's what happens for me. I find firefox excellent when I use it on linux. However, after just installing xp and downloading the newest firefox, I don't notice any difference and both FF and IE are a little on the slow side. It probably has more to do with other things not related to them though.

Same here I really liked Opera but couldn't find a great add-on similar to FireFTP.

And yeah I usually want to shoot myself in the face when I have to make everything IE happy….

Do they have an official release date, I googled but lost, and when are they gonna make us start saying XHTML?
