Skiddie: A Colloquialistic Insult
Script Kiddy. An insult that is tossed aroudn too freely these days. And here is my two shakes on it. Dont wanna hear, nothing constructive to say about the topic? Then fuck off…
All right now thats cleared up. Script Kiddy the general definition being. One who uses scripts or tools to "hack".
Well if we take this definition to be true then a piss load of good hackers and good people I know are skiddies. We get people that throw this insult at anyone who uses a tool, script whatever you wish to call it to gain acess to a system. I believe that you are not a Script Kiddy if you use a tool. All of us had to use them at some point and alot of us still do. The only way to go about some methods of hacking is by the use of tools. Take wireless network penetration then.
Now I believe if the "hacker" understands the process the tool undertakes for them then they are nothing but a novice. So please lets get a thread going where the famous "HBH SKid Flamers" aka Fritzo, Korg etc get in here and give us there definition of Script Kiddy. And what makes you worthy of the title.

Was there anything in particular that this rant was addressing, or just unpleasant past memories?
Your quote above is incomplete. Here is my expanded "definition" / explanation of a script kiddie, using your own quote as a catalyst:
If the "hacker" understands the process the tool undertakes for them, then they are nothing but a novice. However, if a "hacker" understands the underlying principles of the technology they are seeking to exploit, with emphasis placed on the specific focus that the target holds, then they are at least an intermediate. The use of tools is only a defining factor of a script kiddie if the tools are used without prior knowledge to an extent in which, without the tools, the "hacker" could not perform the task, given unlimited time, and understand why it works.
Both criticism and extension of that "definition" are welcome.
I thought script kiddie was more used to describe people who use a tool without knowing the underlying theory or its actions (eg, using nmap without understanding basic networking, flags, etc). Obviously there is a thin line between learner and script kiddie, but this can usually be determined by their general attitude to theyre progression ('I want to know how this works' vs 'Help me hack hotmail plz').
Just my 2c
Thank you both constructive posts.
Yes this is old memories bubbling up to the surface since I have ventured back to HBH from much darker parts of the internet. But yes this is what im looking for. A more complete definition of Script Kiddy. And other peoples opinions.
I have even myself been called a script kiddy before which would be fair enough if it were relating to areas like web hacking where I have nowhere near as much knowledge as I do in relation to networks however it was pertaining to networks and it set my blood boiling. Im just looking to get the HBH communities opinion on this some what historic argument.
Script Kiddie is like a class of people you would identify in the real world. They do things they have no comprehension of and refuse to put effort to understand. As long as it gets them results, they could care less.
There is no tool that makes someone a SK. Just ignorance.
Birth defects may have a link to this. There has been a spike of incompetence in the gene pool lately. I would suggest genocide if it weren't for the humanitarians.
SANTA wrote: Thank you both constructive posts. Constructive in what way? How is this topic of any value to anyone? We can spend all the time in the world trying to classify types of people into convenient little categories, but in the end it changes nothing. We are what we are regardless of the lable we're given.
Furthermore, most terms like that are relative, meaning that one person's idea of what a script kiddie is may be very different than another person's idea. For example: I consider myself to be very intelligent, but next to Einstein I'm probably average.
I don't really use terms like script kiddie, black hat, cracker, etc… I just notice/ become annoyed with stupid people. I use the term "stupid people" because it is a term that welcomes most of the people in real life.
This reminds me of philosophy class. "Do you know what time it is?" "5:43" "But do you know what know means?" "Shut up, I know it when I see it."
Just keep working, be smart, stay chill, try hard, and then no one can judge.
The easiest way to spot script kiddish behavior is by looking at someone's personality. Some examples;
- SK's do not want to learn about the deeper/inner workings of various complex computer… stuff.
- They can't spell for shit. Seriously, they can't. they type liek dis all the tiem. Thier so annoying, you now?
- Still think VB6.0 is the best environment to build tools/apps in.
- Learn tricks, not fundamental knowledge. (ie. I doubleclicked on this .exe file and cmd showed up for a second. I know what I have to do; run it from cmd. I don't know why I have to, but I read this somewhere on the internet.)
- Pretend to be older than they are.
- Every bit of code they own is most probably stolen from somewhere.
- Run Linux because they think it's cool. If they have trouble configuring a 'normal' distro they proceed to insert a Backtrack live CD, claiming it's the best distro for hackers.
These are just a few pointers.

These are just a few pointers. Nicely put.. SKs don't bother to study inner anatomy of things.. They just know how the specific one is done & even if the slight alteration is done, they won't be able to handle..

- SK's do not want to learn about the deeper/inner workings of various complex computer… stuff. This is exactly true. The difference between a newbie to the hacking world and a SK is that the newbie has some sort of desire to better themselves and further their knowledge while the SK could care less.
- They can't spell for shit. Seriously, they can't. they type liek dis all the tiem. Thier so annoying, you now? This one I kind of disagree with. I type like that all the time. what it is is rushed typing or being tired as hell! But yes they do |1k3 70 7yp3 |13k d15!
- Still think VB6.0 is the best environment to build tools/apps in. HEY! I love VB6.0 dammit! Then again I am ancient :P
- Learn tricks, not fundamental knowledge. (ie. I doubleclicked on this .exe file and cmd showed up for a second. I know what I have to do; run it from cmd. I don't know why I have to, but I read this somewhere on the internet.) I like this point. A flashing command window makes Skids jump for joy.
- Pretend to be older than they are. Who does that? All I see are people who say one thing while showing another…ohh wait…nevermind :P
- Every bit of code they own is most probably stolen from somewhere. Not stolen, borrowed without permission or downloaded.
- Run Linux because they think it's cool. If they have trouble configuring a 'normal' distro they proceed to insert a Backtrack live CD, claiming it's the best distro for hackers. What would you call normal? Ubuntu? lol this is another thing people love to think is a real distro…it is nothing but an abomination of Linux…Its WiFi is decent though :P
That is what I think with your information Spyware. Also there is another way that you forgot to mention.
- THEY WIN A SKotY AWARD!!!

Lol is this another one caling me a script kiddy? And in all palces. My rant thread. Lets see what criteria have i adressed so far out of spyware's?
SANTA wrote: Really good posts from spyware.
You expect any different from the spy?
Anyways, This is a good thread but again it will be overlooked by this community like most other good discussion starters…This will do one of two things…Die and rot or get flamed to shit…you pick which one…it is all up to the people dammit! do not let it do either. We need to slow the virus called Script Kiddies. Please work with us not against.

Because then people like me would arm themselves with 2 by 4's and kill the fuckers. Then when confronted with a murder charge. Just justify by saying due to this criteria they were an idiot and the world is better off. Im sure it will work. Honest.

And then the baliff would kill you with a 2 by 4 and present the same reason to the judge.
Just because people are dumb, doesn't mean the world would be better off without them. Firstly, who would do all the grunt work? Scientists? I dont think so, idiots have their purposes. Besides that I know plenty of people who aren't too bright that are good, interesting people.
With this thread you're proposing that we can find a formula to detect a certain type of people and then erradicate them, it's just not the way things are done. EDIT: not the way things **should **be done.

I just saw this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsuD_WP3xFU Hehe, "and… utter social ineptitude."
@ santa and co: There is a way around any written rule. If you only let in "smart" people, you have to deal with a-holes. If you let in only the "1337", you get people who are never around. And those terms are always going to have arbitrary definitions because this is a public community.
And there's something that has been bugging me for a little while now. You don't have to hit "return" at the end of every sentence.

Hah, that's great.
And those terms are always going to have arbitrary definitions because this is a public community. Exactly, that's another problem with this idea.
Take my idiot example. In order for the entire community to come to an agreement on the definition of an idiot, people that are dumb would have to admit it, and that's just not in human nature. You can't just say "let's not count the stupid people's opinions in this decision" because the criteria for what makes a person an idiot hasn't been decided yet. Therefore it logically can't be done.
maug wrote: If you only let in "smart" people, you have to deal with a-holes.
Too late… I'm already here.
And there's something that has been bugging me for a little while now. You don't have to hit "return" at the end of every sentence. I second this.
Other than that… there's really nothing else to say. This thread is getting stupid now.
