Get to know the environment and learn all of the commands. Best thing to do is just explore and test imo. And from Vista -> Linux, you're upgrading.

get a few live cds and see what works I suggest trying Slax, Madriva, Open SUSE, Knoppix and Kubuntu (I dont like Gnome) and to be honest if your going for live distros get a copy of open solaris

Get a copy of slax no matter what you do and have it live on a usb key I have it on a 4gb sd card in the front of my laptop just in case I need a linux distro

http://opensolaris.org/index.html http://www.kubuntu.org/ http://www.opensuse.org/ http://www.knoppix.org/ http://www.mandriva.com/ http://www.slax.org/

*edit Just realized the "in front of laptop makes no sense unless you know I have an SD slot in the front of my lappy

i'll second spyware on installing Debian teaching you lots, and while i'm on that i'll thank the #hbh.

allright if you wanna learn stuff go here:

debian.org/doc and also http://tldp.org/

then go to /usr/share/doc and read read read. you can use zless to read gzipped stuff (and for bz2 use bzless)

then do $ man man $ man grep $ man <other shit> replace <other shit> for whatever program you want to learn more about
