I recently quit my job and i still had access to my email. I joined another company that was somewhat similar and realized i still had access to my email. I read some of the distribution emails from corporate and an employee at the old company told me that they might take legal action. Could they do anything? Is it considered hacking? I am concerned and uneasy. Please help me.

Eh. I wouldn't worry that much, unless: They are competing companies. You intentionally gained access to the email system. or you are sharing important information about the old company.

If none of those apply, then seriously, just tell the guy to fuck off.

Ok. So… Lately I quit my job but until one week ago i was still accessing my email and looking at financial information which i had the password to because it is my email but wasn't disabled by my own company. Am I legally liable?

This might sound like a stupid question, but Your financial information stored on your old email, or their financial information? And, Did you decide to stop accessing the email, or did they lock you out of it?

I really wouln't worry, the unauthorized access would be if you used someones elses email, or you would have to intentionally misuse the data. However if there is still valid e.g. code of conduct, this may differ, and the company could take legal actions ( but usually validity of coude of conduct expires once you aren't in the company anymore ).

Also as you didn't damaged the company, the expenses of taking the legal actions would be probably higher than the actual remedy
