Let's admit it, we all have our hacker heroes.

mine:

a) Adrian Lamo because he hacked into institutions to show insecurity, and informed them. The only ones wanted him jailed are the NY Times and Microsoft (hell they'd convict anyone that piss them)

b) Gary McKinnon. Well, he did hack into Pentagon. (according to hacker legend, the first people that hacked into Pentagon are Kevin Poulsen and Ron Austin in the early 80's)

c) Linus Torvalds. Well, he wrote Linux. that's good enough.

d) Steve Wozniak. Phreak, Coder, Hardware Hacker.

e) Richard Stallman. Otherwise, we'd be paying for all sorts of software.

f) Kevin Mitnick. well, he's a legend. but of course some of it are myths

g) Dr-K. to tell you the truth, I became more dedicated to computers after reading his book, The Complete Hacker's Handbook. I still read it.

You might like the book "the best software writing"

The guy goes into a bunch of techie bloggers and makes the mixed tape equivalent for blogging. You might want to get the ebook version because of the links. And there are a couple neat things, starting with the cover, that are done. Written in 2005.

But I don't really like the term hacker, especially because a lot of smart people don't go by that handle.

google: "the best software writing"

PS, yur a brown nose. and legality doesn't mean much since most of our laws seem to be pretty damn stupid.

Most of y'all know who i respect,

And if you're not on this list, but you know you hold my respect, it's nothing personal, tbh to earm my respect you don't have to be leet, it's just about integrity.

Samurai -> for being the brother i never had. Fishy -> for making sure i push the limits Strayfe -> for having the balls to tell everyone else they're wrong, and stick to her beliefs. DJDD and Gumbie -> for keeping me sane when living with mother for a while, and for helping me set shit up. CarbonLifeForm -> for being about as down to earth as they come Uniques -> for furnishing me with several new books and letting me crash at his place.

More people whom i can't think of off hand.

[EDIT!]

Few people have bitched and moaned.. sooo….

System -> for raising my opinion of PHP from "pansy language" to "pansy language with a few strongpoints" The whole RASnet crew -> you guys fucking crack me up.

Technically it's only illegal if you get convicted…….

It would be good to get an up-to-date guide of some of the legal loopholes concerning "hacking" as some people seem to get away with an awful lot of minor stuff on technicalities. If anyone knows a good site then post it here maybe?

technically, it's illegal whether you get caught or not, it's just that unless you get caught, the legallity doesnt matter.

Ask "Should I", not "Can I"

Then the problem is solved. Note: "Should I" is usualy directly connected to "Can I get away with it"

I've been studying Kevin Mitnik recently and trying to improve my ability to SE. That guy is amazing! I also look up to pioneers like John Draper (Captain Crunch) and Steve Wozniak.

I have learned a lot from many different people at HBH, so I'd have to include those people on this list too.

actually, Kevin Poulsen and Ron Austin beat James by hacking into Pentagon in 1982, while Jon did it in 1999.

Morris: a good example of "i didn't know it'll end up this way" type of guy.

and for those in hbh: richo, for willing to help me, japanesedude, for helping me understand stuff better, mr_cheese for setting this place up (but i still wonder if the "investigation" is actually true….) flame, for being a friend and everyone else. (i tend to think everyone is my friend)
