making a linux os

hey i was wondering if any one could point me in the right direction on making a linux os i want to start off small so probably just a command line type of linux to start off with but i would like to eventually make a os with a gui. any help i can get would be apprietiated. thanks

some more info on what im looking for in this os is that i want to be able to boot it off of my 8 gb thumbdrive. im on the road allot and i dont have a laptop so i want it to boot from the thumbdrive so i can use it on any computer i want. thanks for the help again

er… do you mean something like finding a collection of components you can put together to make a functional os? I'm no pro there but I'd say all you'd really need to do would be to download a kernel, a shell, and some programs. That's essentially what Linux is, at the simplest level, or any OS for that matter. I've heard of this before in Popular Science magazine, but not sure exactly how you'd go about doing it. Good luck anyway…

But, if you want a small bootable linux distro, I'd go with DamnSmallLinux, Gentoo Minimal, or Xubuntu. They'd fit very well on a flash drive and, because they're so small, could be loaded completely into ram.

Linux is like opensource, thats the hole point of linux. Anyway, what you chould to is look into the source of the distros ThorsDecree sad (DamnSmallLinux, Gentoo Minimal, or Xubuntu) and then modify it?
