Folding@home
Hey everyone, I just thought I'd tell you all about this really cool thing called Folding@home. I guessed that a lot of you here would have multiple computers, or keep your computers on the whole time. In that case, you are wasting a lot of potential, folding@home is a way that you can put those wasted cpu cycles to good use.
What is folding@home? Basically it utilizes the power of computers all around the world to perform complex calculations into how protein folding works. All you have to do is download the client program, and then it will download work from the main server, calculate it, and send the results back.
Now, I'm not going to explain in detail what protein folding is, (because you'll get bored), but it's linked to diseases such as BSE…ah screw this, just read it from their site.
Also, you can have 'teams' in the folding project that you can join, and then the teams can compete to see who can get the most work done :P
I think hellboundhackers should have a team, could be good publicity, and would show that we are nice people for wanting to help a research project.
Actually I got bored now so I decided to make hbh a folding@home team. Our team id is 95774 (put that into your folding@home program) And our page is here
By the way, I'm not getting paid by stanford to post this thread :P
only_samurai wrote: weird, i had to disable my firewall to get it started, then turned it back on. try that?
No firewall active, but wait, crouching windows, idle account! I might have a way to solve this mystery. Let me try…
Edit
Now I know for sure no firewall is active, still, the program tells me it could not connect to the servers (primary, secondary, the lot).
Meh, why?
only_samurai wrote: lawl, how far are you into your first WU?
I've already done seven work units on my ps3, but none for the hbh group yet :( work units take about 3 days to complete on my crappy old desktop pc Y_Y
I think the folding servers might be down or something at the moment, I can't upload or download work units :/
EDIT: seems like a few servers are indeed down http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html
an average computer uses 60-250 watts when in use, more if its being used for process heavy tasks and more if your processor is fast.
With all of you guys and the thousands more "helping" by donating their processor is going to make one big ass accumulative carbon footprint.
Your all gonna deforest earth and turn our atmosphere into a sulpherous nightmare!!
and even if you dont then you might find a cure for cancer or something which will result in millions of people who would have died living which means increased population growth with diminishing resources and space and us humans dont share well which could lead to a nuclear war!!!!!
Muhahahahahahaha
we are all going to DIE!!!!
but seriously……. :whoa: it might be doing more harm than good sort of :right:
note: not my actual view, im just playing devils advocate

A threat is a minor threat, not a global fist that is rocking and shaking earth. I call Gore's bluff.
Dont be so quick to dismiss the dangers of climate change
Ayr4 wrote: Pfft, what this does dont increase the CO2 release much…i mean, think about those new heavy games or like the WOW-servers…
just because its not graphically intensive dosnt mean it isnt energy intensive.
yeah…. anyway

only_samurai wrote: WU's only take me about a day on my dual core machine here. and the other machines here sitting idle are probably going to join in soon. Looks like I will be the leader for a while.
Not if I can help it. I have access to about 30 school computers, and tons more if I really wanted. The problem would be to inconspicuously download the program on all of the machines. :xx:
SwartMumba wrote: I never said anything about slowing anyone down. I was thinking of putting all the computers in my one user name, but know I realize that it will create different accounts. Oh well, you will know its me. :)
You can do that with folding, have many of your computers operating under one name :) I have 4 computers now running under my name
I might ask the IT guys at my school if they can't install it on all the computers and just run it at night when no one is using them…
spyware wrote: Ooooh, was that your point? Any non-speculative charts? Any facts, ciphers, numbers? The climate is changing, but we have very little to do with that. It's a cycle.
i agree its a cycle but we do have something to do with it, we are just speeding up a process that would normally take quite a bit longer.
Its all to do with ice and glaciers really, our pollution has only caused a slight temperature change but that change has set off a cycle that will cause global warming to accelerate. Slightly higher temperatures have caused a small amount of meltwater in places where it would normally be frozen all year round.
This meltwater sinks to underneath glaciers by melting holes to the bottom of the glacier which it then acts as a lubricant causing the glacier to speed up causing it to receed as it starts to melt faster than it forms.
And because ice is the main thing that keeps is cold due to its unique propertys of being less dense than water and it being white which means it reflects sunlight, this all causes the temp to rise slightly which turns it into a loop that will keep going until all ice has melted :O
want proof?

sorry for the big gap between posts iv been very busy

It's a cycle, new ice will form in time. Earth has been through this process loads of times. Nature will heal, ice will form, earth will live on.
yeah didnt notice that sorry but there are loads of pics onlong those lines. the earth might live on but if the climate changes too drastically we might not.
I'm in the process of signing up, but what I just thought of is this.
Isn't this web site basically hosting a botnet, but for a good use? I remember reading that a single botnet has the computing power of the 50 top super-computers currently around. So couldn't this be used to do well… anything and everything that anybody could possible think of?
Samurai, watch yourself, I'm about 3k points behind you.
yeeeah… i definitely took your advice, Swart_Mumba
Might wanna get that new system up and running ^_^
Happy folding all.
ah, and it's probably a no-go with the admins… even though I give them passes I stole from about 30 students for the proxy auth and mail system, admin passes on half the school machines, and remove the fooool worm from every computer lab machine, they still treat me as vermin… vermin to be watched closely, nonetheless.
If I do manage to convince them, I guess that would be something to put on my resume when I apply for Stanford U this year ^_^
