Poetry Program

Today I made a program that can (sort of) write poetry! Remember I just made this today so it has a lot of errors such as too much repetition, bad subject-verb agreement, etc but it can still write some very funny stuff!

http://helnet.org/poembot/?lines=5

You can change lines to whatever number you like.

I enjoyed it. =D

NOTE: You should limit the number of lines people can write, however, unless you're fine with people doing something like this until your script execution time runs out.

your program CANNOT write poetry, it merely emulates the generative action of composing it through a selection of verses in a script.

My statements remain the same until you can provide me with proof of it making 1 single coherent line with Artificial Intelligence, or with a simple Genetic Algorithm.

He wasn't "being an ass". He was stating that the program merely composes poetry, instead of writing it. He's right.

You're the only one being an ass with a response like that. If you can't handle creative criticism, don't post in the forums.

Ok, I was a little out of line calling him an ass, but I never claimed this could truly write poetry. It's just a little program I made for fun.

shrug I don't think he intended for the program to be the most advanced artifically intelligent poetry writing machine on the planet, it looks more like something just for kicks, as he states.

he never claimed it was anything special, so we shouldn't assume it's anything special.

for what he stated it as, it's an amusing way to kill a few minutes.

I agree, but I hate when people ask other people for their advice on something and then, when they get it, they get all pissy. It's obvious that the program is not serious and was quickly thrown together, which should've made him expect some somewhat negative responses. In that case, if not that much effort was put into the object of criticism, then the criticism should not receive any more effort.

Anyways, for my criticism… I noticed that, once you get up to about 30 or so lines, lines start repeating 3 or 4 times in a row at times. Other than that, it looks pretty good. Try doing a program that can combine predefined nouns, verbs, and such into the sentences for the poetry, and it would get really interesting. Kinda like Mad Libs. ;)

throwing words together will NOT create poetry, again. It takes more than just using REGEX or a string manipulation language. Not even AI is developed enough yet to create poetry, yet.

@NullByte: I don't like being called names. Would you like to be taught the hard way?

Yea, I'm working on fixing the repetition. But my program does combine predefined nouns, verbs, etc to make sentences. What do you mean when you say it?

The "hard way" isn't so POETIC in nature. Stop while you (and I) can. Don't get me to the point of no return.

No return is what he said, no return is what you get.

No return, it's no fun, no return, start to run.

No return, darkest night, no return, netfish just took away, all your sunlight.

[serious]

The program is kind of funny, but also useless. It writes unintelligent and weird sentences. Why don't you show your source code so we can comment it ;x?

I don't think poetry can be written by a machine. You would need human brains to write REAL poetry. You could write a program that outputs something like the crap I just posted, but REAL poetry is another league, superPC shit.

The source is nothing impressive, and you will see how easily I did this. All the files that are included can be found in the /poembot folder on helnet.

I love you spyware.

It doesn't look like anyone really posts on the board anyways, so, no worries.

You are either very brave, or unfamiliar with the ways of Netfish.

Be gone, my friend. Haste your soul towards the nearest exit, or Netfish will find a suitable exit for you.

EDIT:

I guess that's what he meant with suitability, but right now you are his liability. He'll chase you through infinity, will destroy you, to revive his dignity.

All I do is make your words rhyme, you say dick, I say you have the attitude of a cheap porn flick. Both of you are cheap and full of fakes, your words, your actions, all of them distractions to protect the real schmuck, all you are is FUCK.

Bye HBH. I'm tired of people asking for people's opinions in the forums, and rejecting it. Then immediately get pissed off when they get some constructive criticism. Fuck all haterz and whiteh8!

Haterz you shall see, since clearly all they can hate is who they cannot be. Farewell and goodbye, take care and so long, remembered you will be as guy who said ping, they never said pong. They now realize open as water their server was, a netfish came through, open and wide his jaws. Eaten you have, their source-code for sure, only one fish in the sea, can make things look so insecure.

Ciao ;)

Gay you can say, all that matters is the way, that netfish made my day. Changing your post was pretty cool, and all you could do is look like a (common?) fool.
