OPENSUSE I386 Version sense you are using an old POS machine like myself. I am just starting to learn linux so if you do decide to install SUSE I'd be glad to teach you what I am learning right now. I am currently trying out KDE because I was using Gnome for awhile but IDK which one i like the best. If you don't decide to go with SUSE I would recommend Ubuntu because it's popular and easy to find help. Good luck and have fun.

no ubuntu has higher system requirements than that. i know becuase i have a computer just like yours and i asked at the formus / read the community documentation and i found it isnt strong enough to INSTALL ubuntu (you need higher RAM for that…)

Ah, well maybe his computer won't be able to handle any GUI. I didn't really look at RAM. DSL might be his only choice, but that is a tough one to do just beginning! Maybe find some shit RAM that no one is using. That is what I did with one of my other shit computers. Garage sales are great, because people have no idea that their old POS is worth more than five dollars! MWHAAHA :evil:

check out the freeNAS idea, turn your old computer into a netowrk-connecte to your computer live backup kind of thing. just send files to it and you can access them from any other computer in the house plus if one of the computers goes down you'll still have your pics,docs etc. in the NAS.

freeNAS.com (or .org dont know)

nah it'll runa GUI fine. i run mandrake 9 on a K6 server…. i also run redhat 6 on a 486, which WILL run a gui, (i don't though),,,

in the process of putting unix on a 286 now.

I had to use basic linux on that one.

uhh dude…. 64 meg is quite a lot in terms of old PC's…. many stock Pentium three's had that.. and it was a lot. my 286 has about 4 meg i think.

You can also check out www.distrowatch.com if you want to do your own independent research on it. I wouldn't be picky about which linux distro you pick, because you can always install another one for free if you don't like the one you first install and no matter what you go with you'll learn the basics of linux. Good luck! ;)

you could get knoppix at http://www.knoppix.net/ its linux on a disc and also free, athough this means you keep reseting your data unless you save everything to a USB memory stick…;

I would say, for easyness sake Ubuntu, I know I read it isn't possible. I used it on older systems ;) You do have to try and get an older one ( I believe Breezy or before) whith the non-graphical installation.

To my opinion the main plus of Ubuntu is the apt-get packet-manager, which comes with all debian-based distro's, it's a very easy way of installing new software.

My favorite Linux at this moment is Slackware, which is a very stable Linux which ( without X) runs on a pc with 16mb's of ram.

Then, from the available desktop-managers I would choose XFCE, since it also doesn't require much.
