Virtual machine software for Linux

I'd like to know if I can get a free, preferable open-source, virtual machine software.

I don't have ANY experience with them but I'd like to be able to run Win95/98 within Kubuntu.

Anyone know of any?

There's VMWare player but from what I've read it runs VMs but can't create them… Or am I misunderstanding?

whats the problem? create them on windows whit some free utility. Once the virtual machine its created you can run it on vmware player, in windows or in linux as you want.

http://petruska.stardock.net/software/ here theres some good freeware tool to manage vm in windows. once created, put them on a usb or other device, then run it on ubuntu vmplayer.

Ah ok then… One final question (sorry)

Will I have to wait until I get Windows 98 to make the VM or can I put it on at a later date

Whit virtual machines you virtualize the hardware, not the software. So create a vm, whit network card, sound, hd etc etc Put it in ubuntu and run it whit vmplayer.

Install the os in the virtual machine when you want.
