linspire sucks, you would be better off sticking w/ windows rebirth, if you know nothing about linux/*nix then dont insert such idiotic comments
zer0pain1337: no one can tell you waht linux to use, differnet distros fit differetn people here are some helpful links to figuring out which may fit you best

I love FreeBSD, which is not linux
Wsoprulz1299
dont get linspire, is not even free. Wsoprulz1299 is right, different nix'es fit different people
I like SUSE http://www.novell.com/linux/ and Ubuntu, http://www.ubuntu.com/. i like Ubuntu, because they will send you a disk free, and it has a live CD too, so you can try it.
If you dont like Knome in Ubuntu there is kubuntu, ubuntu with KDE (but theres no free disk :()
that goes against the whole idea of open source and one of the main reasons people use *nix and why woudl you be so desperate to get such a shitty OS… Windows is far better than linspire is.. you obviously do not know much about linux/*nix so don't waste your breath by suggesting such distro's there are far better distros that are "easy" to use and well-fit for a beginner
as for the distro's Zalifer suggested: i've heard some good things about ubuntu/kubuntu so that would probalby be a quite good/easy distrobution to begin w/ as for SuSE: i've heard it's not very nice, other than it has support for a wide variety of hardware, so if you have an assortment of newer hardware, i guess that would be one you could consider
If it were up to me, I woudl dive into the deep end of the pool, you learn much faster this way I would suggest FreeBSD, debian, slackware, or gentoo and before anyone starts rambling on about the difficulty level, everythign you could possiby need are in documentation online; the only difference with these OS's are that they do require a considerable amount of reading, while more simpler distrobutions are straightforward

… Dude, what are you talking about, Fedore Core 4 (now 5) is one of the best distros around. It is a thousand times better than that shitty linspire eye candy stuff (which still shares some features with Microsux).
You only started with it.. but really never found out the utility of its core.. Hope you reconsider trying it out again, and experience its true power over linspire.

Burn a live CD of knoppix to start. Thats what I did, Then I use it to learn my way around it. You dont have to install it that way.
Of course, I learned my way around DOS/batch programming before I tried linux. It makes it easier to look around it to find out commands. Since then i have Phlak ive been working around. (still suggest knoppix first) http://knoppix.net/ Pretty simple answer.

I prefer SuSE linux
and, seeing as this is a hacking site, I'm suprised that noone has mentioned PHLAK. You can dl an ISO at phlak.org. It's a great toolkit OS, I use it all the time.
Has anyone tried Operator. I have only heard ofit recently.
