Any opinions on Fedora Core 9?
Hey, just got a copy of Fedora Core 9 and I was wondering if anyone here has an opinion on it. I use to use Red hat 5 but well 9 is the new standard so I am most likely going to test it out. Actually I am going to test it out, I was just wondering if anyone wanted to blog their view on it. Shed some light on me.
Did you use version 9? I am use to Fedora Core… I want to say 5 but it may have been 4. And I personally liked it myself. Thought it was great when I use to use it. I want to get Backtrack as the OS however the computer wont even register the disk. I almost want to try the boot from flash drive. It is only that one computer too. And has nothing to do with boot order. Well. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Maybe I'm old-fashioned about it, but I remember learning the most from good ol' Fedora Core 1. After FC3, things started to get a little too resource-heavy for me. Furthermore, after trying FC8 for a very short period of time not too long ago… I can't imagine that FC9 would encourage me to mess with Fedora anymore. My preference, when it comes to distros based upon Red Hat, would be CentOS. All the functionality, little fluff. To each his own, though.
<OT>Slackware is a great distro. I'd be using it if it weren't for Gentoo.</OT>
chronicburst wrote: Are you implying that your favorite is the Gentoo linux distro? O am assuming that is so, well I guess I may take a look into it. Depending on when this download finishes. Its like 4 hours in. Not right. Well if Gentoo beats it I will try it first. I was making an offhand response to Infamous's bit about Slackware. Gentoo is my favorite, yes… but, it will take you longer than it will take for you to download FC to actually INSTALL Gentoo, so you should probably just stick with FC.
chronicburst wrote: Well Gentoo is all ready on a disk as for FC 9 , which is still downloading. What im doing now is trying to get "non-system disks" to boot. Found an old Compaq Evo hanging around. If you manage to complete a Gentoo install successfully (w/ a GUI installed at the end), then you will gain more knowledge from doing that than you would fooling with an "easier" Linux for months. If you know that you'll give up when it gets too hard, though, don't bother… wasted time is still wasted time.
I used Fedora 9 core. I was not happy with it. It was really resource heavy and application would sometimes just hang for no reason. I even had a few instances where XKill did not do the trick and a couple different times I could not even access root.
Personally I prefer Ubuntu for desktop or DSL/Backtrack for more specific purposes. Right now I am running windows (not happy here either) because a friend wanted me to try a game. I am getting a new comp setup and ditching this system.

Very true..
I dont see where zephyr was being a dick?
He's actually dead on. You need problem solving skills to install a distro like Gentoo/Slackware (successfully anyway). It can be a lot of fun playing with stuff like that but it can also be very frustrating. I believe he is warning you that some distros are not for the faint of heart…
EDIT: Sorry forgot to answer your question, I believe our teacher gave us fedora core 3-4. Fedora core 8 had just come out and my instructor said something similar to zephyr as far as the newer versions sucking resources for applications that don't need to be there in the first place. He is a terminal kinda guy, thank god.

Exactly. Some people like to play the part of the kicked puppy when they are too stupid to glean advice. … And they wonder why we're assholes to them when they ask for help.

It was a compliment… you'll understand it more once you have the pleasure of reading through the next dozen or so "What's the best Linux" or "What's your favorite distro" threads.
chronicburst wrote: Except for the part where we all ready Ubuntu only adds 1.5 inches.
That's only if you're using it like a complete noob. Ubuntu is just as viable a distro as any for people who know what they're doing. Just because it has apt-get doesn't mean that they outlawed building from source. All of the things that people have come to love about Linux are present there… it's just a question of taste. Hell, I even still use Dapper LTS or Server for some things when I need an app server and it fits the bill. Obviously, the person that posted about it above has more knowledge than the typical Ubuntu stick in the mud.
Why am I saying all of this? Because your smartass attitude is annoying. How on Earth do you contribute useless shit to your own thread?
