hi, i've got Microsoft Windows Vista and am considering switching OS to say maybe linux. (Considering i'll be using for ethical hacking/programming etc) what is the best OS i should use

Windows Vista is the best OS in the world today.

i've got vista but i dont think it is. It's too secure things like John the Ripper Cain and abel are detected as security risks. Also compatability is a BIIIIG issue john the ripper doesnt work on it along with many more tools

Maybe you're right. Windows vista is just too secure.

Alright, I'll be serious for a minute. Xandros is a release of linux that's made to pursuade windows users to move to linux. It will probably be the friendliest move you can make. No matter what, dual boot or better yet try it out on a live CD, see if you like it. I'm sure you will, and it might take some getting used to but ultimately it will benefit you if you can use both (I'm not saying scrap windows, there are lots of games/software written for only windows, on the other hand linux is more secure because it's hard for anyone to write a virus for linux since there are so many distros out there). Ubuntu is alright, here just read through this:

http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT3269115798.html

Google: It's a great tool. You should try and use it sometime.

you should try a few different OS

i think XP is good, its not TOO secure, like vista, and most programs work with XP

you could always have more than one OS lol ;)

Ubuntu and Dream Linux are 2 very solid Linux Distros. If you want to lean on Linux for Hacking mainly instead of just All Round use then you could always Install BackTrack 3 it being "THE HACKER DISTRO"

thanks for that i might consider eith xp or a version of Linux and another thing is backtrack 3 only compatabile with linux

Backtrack 3 is a linux distro, you idiot.

cough Backtrack 3 ISSSSSSS Linux. You might want to google "linux" before making yourself look anymore stupid. Learn what a "live cd" is and what the word "distro" means. You also might want to Wikipedia Linux and learn the differences you'll need to get used to. As others have said. You can dual boot a linux distro AND windows. and some times … XP/Vista/[any linux distro] Like my freind who also does Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is a good place to start if you are thinking of web dev stuff or web server stuff.

I kinda liked mandriva. I've tried a couple others too, but nothing too much. Kubuntu shouldn't be too hard to get used to, and actually I thought some things were easier to understand compared to windows. I hear it is more geared towards games than other distros, but I never looked.

I just switched to XP pro and it really is nice as far as compatibility. It depends on what you currently do, and what you want to do (please don't say "use JtR"). make sure you don't cut off what you need.

and I don't mean to get all nasty across the internet or whatever, but it really sounds like you have some reading up to do. so read up.

did the guy who claimed vista to be the best OS in the world really not get flammed?

ghost's Avatar

it actually is.

all sorts of cool stuff with vista. You can like change the desktop background to like any picture, and it's all pretty..

looooooooooooooool vista is the best…..piece of crap out there, lol i.m.o, for u to kno what the best s.o is for u (bein good for someone else doesnt mean it´ll suit u too), u gotta know what use u´ll put it to. what u wanna do, programming, hacking, play games, etc if ur a gamer ( i play alot too), i´d suggest dual booting windows xp(preferably pro) and linux. try various distros, to see what u like best. if u dont like one, uninstal it and try another one. there are other o.s´s out there, but i think u should start with linux, and progress from there. another good way to try out linux distros, like it was said back there, is to use live distros (distros on bootable cd´s, no installation needed) its a nice way to try em out without havin to install em everytime. u can only kno whats best for u by tryin em ps: linux takes a bit gettin used to, but in the end u cant live without it, heheheheh in the end this is only my personal opinion, so all i ask is to not get flamed, cause in the end im still a n00b, and im here to learn, and to help where i can

i like all unix-like but currently i am learning RCE and assembler so i prefer Windows :) I think its good to get at first time Ubuntu latest version and after you learn how to use Linux switch to Slackware and learn Perl and C :)

If you have Norton: Settings->Virus and Spyware protection options->Spyware protection->Uncheck the "hack tools" box

I Use XP on my main computer and ubuntu on my laptop.

In conclusion it seems like a DUal boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu is what you will want to try out. Unless you like another Linux distro more.

i agree with that

The new Ubuntu:

i put the cd in my computer and it gives you the option to install it along side windows without you having to partition etc

fashizzlepop's Avatar

Well it still DOES partition just automatically. You dont have to do it ahead of time…

To answer the OP's question seriously, The best OS to install is the one you know how to use, Change and secure the best. To anyone who posted installing any version of linux for hacking is an idiot. It doesn't matter what OS you have, Windows, linux or mac the only thing that makes you a "hacker, programmer, web developer" is how good you are. I have XP pro (my version) on 3 boxes and have ubuntu 8.04 on another I do all my "work" on XP.

ghost's Avatar

I may as well say what I said before again. Basically what korg said plus:

don't cut off anything you need. I just changed my main computer to XP for compatability reasons. It isn't fun when you are trying to get some work done, but end up troubleshooting because you arn't familiar with the OS.

k..

swap the hard drive you are trying to partition with your main hard drive (year take open the cover, switch em, set the jumpers). Boot from WinXp install disk. Delete all partitions on the HD in question. Recreate partions to max FAT32 partition size.

continue as if you where installing XP and at the screen that says

format fat 32 (quick) format fat 32 format ntfs (quick) format ntfs

Choose format FAT32

let the format complete… when windows starts installing (ie.. copying XXX to XXX) turn the computer off.

Restore the Hard drives back to their original state. Boot from the original OS hard drive. Now. in diskmanager you'll on the second disk you'll see a partion that is FAT32 and unused partion space. You will be able to format/partition the hardrive using XP from here…

Couldnt you use a live linux distro you may have lying around, then use fdisk/qtparted? I think they support pretty much every format under the sun.

You silly fuck.

The whole point of unix is compliancy, ideally to a posix standard.

I'm a unix geek, so I can find my way around on pretty much any unix.

I apply the same skills to my Linux, BSD, HP UX, SGI IRIX, Solaris (Both open and proprietry) and embedded systems every day.

Plus there's overlap, no reason you can't run for example, a GNU userland with a BSD kernel.

To the original poster:

Get linux, probably Mandriva, it's pretty noob friendly. I'm a big fan of debian for machines i just want to work, that I don't have to mess with, for my tinkering machines I run variations on debian, Gentoo and LFS.

Hit me up on irc if you need help (irc.psych0tik.net ssl 6697)

What is "BEST"?

There is not one "BEST" Operating System.

It is all user Dependant. If you like Windows use Windows. If you know Linux use it. BSD Ditto. You catch my drift.

As it has been said The best operating system is the one you are most proficient with.

Wow..the usual rag here. Pple following the whole microsoft sucks expression….true there not open source…but its a solid operating system…bill gates had to make money somehow..and he wouldn't be where he was if he gave it out as freeware….Windows has its downs but so does linux….both also have there ups though. Gaming is a best on windows….as far as ease of use and graphical interface windows has the up too. Its all about what you want….both have ups…both have downs…which is the reason i dual boot..at least on my desktop..my lappys purely on vista ultimate…major tweaks though…and i have it packed with 4 GIGs of RAM..the max it'll hold….so it runs just fine…Vista's only horrid for the unprepared…you can't expect 1 gig ram from a cheap ass computer to hold and run vista very well…especially if your running high end applications…
