I think there is similiar thing as 'urpmi' for mandriva, which is global repository of packages, which you can install just from command line… or just google rpm and ubuntu
I think there's synpatic software manager in your administration/system menu… but most of applications that you need are already in included in your installation :) btw which version of ubuntu your going to install?
I played around with making linux firewalls and penetrating with backtrack in a lab, but never actually got round to putting linux on one of my computers.
Putting on the new ubuntu on 8.4 i thinks.
