Linux Help

First off, this is just in a "perfect world" I really don't have that much knowledge in programming so this is just a quick question I have.

Since Linux (specifically Ubuntu 7.10), is completely open source, is it possible to completely rearrange the code, and make your own Operating System out of it?

If not, how do you create OS's?

This question has already been addressed. I think there are two threads. I remember someone posting a link to a howto page, never looked at it though.

If you are planning on creating something, or rearranging anything, I suggest you pick a language and learn it.

do it that way,…. unless you feel like building it all from scratch. which is… hard.

So, what would the benefits be of starting from scratch? Or would the Pro's and Con's be the same if I just rearranged my Linux?

I also assume that the programming needs to be done in C and C++ right?

Any good books or online tutorials that I can look for a quick reference?
