Help with LInux

I am trying to download updated packages for Linux, but whenever I try to do this a window appears and reads exactly this…

"An error occured

The following details are provided:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg –configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

I have two questions.

  1. What does this mean?

  2. How do I solve this problem?

I know I will MOST LIKELY get my ass flamed constantly for posting this, but I have no idea of what to do.

rm *

Seems as though you have a corrupted file in your update folder. Remove those and try your operation again.

well that's always the next option, but removing recently acquired updates is generally more likely to fix the issue than delving into your hidden files…
