Cant Ping target computer over the net

Hi

A friend of mine has allowed me remote access through his pc. All im trying to do is ping his router, as im a noob i set myself this (i thought) simple task as a first lesson. Looking at my friends PC I have his online broadband ip (his router gained from (www.whatsmyip.com) I have deactivated all of his firewalls Komodo / Windows Firewall / Router Firewall. I have also tried to add the ports im trying to connect to to his router as well ports 14000 / 14001 and 443. He has a BT Homehub and I have a WAG54GS. I have read extensively how to add ports but still not 100% sure, i have added all of the ports above to my router and to his router ports, allowed all the traffic through my Nortons firewall and also allowed ICMP echo response on my router / also on BT routers there is a setting for DMZ which i have set to display a public ip and i still cant bloody ping his router !!!!!!

I know these BT boxes stealth the ports but surely if i set ports on mine and his router to allow traffic this should let me through the firewall so that I can play around with NetSpy (my training level 2!!)

Any help would really be appreciated im learning every day :o

Please please please to save me hours of trawling the internet which i have already done can you describe a process which i can use to ping and locate his router I basically want to perform an NMAP test on his router but cant do that till i get a responsive IP

try nmap <ip address> -P0 (that's a zero after the P)

that will continue the scan even if the router is blocking the ping requests

Ill try that and see if it works, Ill post back my results got to wait for him to come online again. Still scratching my head about not being able to use WinSpy through the recommended ports 14000, 14001 and 433 Ive set all up on both routers surely this should allow the WinSpy traffic through ?

im not hacking by the way or a script kiddie im learning about ports / firewalls and simple nmap commands etc

Tried it, it says

dnet: Failed to open device (name) QUITTING!!

The IP address that I used has been reported to me by WinSpy as I have the remote side installed im wondering whether this is the right IP to use, how do I tell that the IP I have is his routers IP ?
